I have a HIGHLY THEORETICAL theory as to what the technology that achieves what they are selling does.
Please bear with me as I have some understanding of wireless technology, but, not enough to actually be useful.
From what little I know, for this to be even slightly true, they would be using a system that looks like this:
1 - A tower with hyper sensitive receiving only RF pads on an unallocated frequency.
2 - The client has a boosted omni on the above frequency, this is used for transmitting only.
3 - The client will also have a satellite dish mounted in the ceiling or externally for receiving directly from the satellite.
4 - A BIG contract with a satellite downstream bandwidth provider.
5 - Throw in a central South African ADSL "hub" site to save on costs.
The client's omni can transmit 40km through a single wall easily enough. The receiving tower pads only have to worry about receiving signals, so they can be hyper sensitive. The tower then speaks to the client via a satellite in orbit to the dish in the client's ceiling/roof/wall.
Because the pc -> tower communication is one-way, it's very much just like a radar with sending only and receiving only equipment. There is no need to "make room" for transmitting acknowledgements and sending data and all the related problems that are associated with that mess. That is how they can achieve 40km range through a wall.
So, to ask for a website's opening page, it's like this:
1. One-way client to tower one-way.
2. Tower to wired internet via ADSL on local-only.
3. Local-only ADSL to central South African ADSL site (30ms latency).
4. Central South African ADSL site to International ADSL.
5. International ADSL to central satellite control station, probably in the USA (180ms latency)
6. Central satellite control station creates data stream for requested content.
7. Data stream for requested content beamed to satellite.
8. Satellite bounces signal down to client's satellite dish on the ceiling/roof/wall.
9. Client sends acknowledgement to tower.
And, all this can be done in less than the usual 500ms's response time that we are used to on our international bandwidth.
The 180ms lag mentioned above is a good ping on my current ADSL line to New York divided in two (Cos, it's a halfway trip, even thought the tower is still waiting for a response from New York, New York can already be sending the data to the satellite before the tower gets the acknowledgement from New York).
Note again, this is pure speculation.
Did they mention how much equipment the client would have to install?
