Cellular ID registration – here is what you must do

*If you live in an informal residence you must provide the address of a school or church closest to the area in which you live.

How do you prove that you live in an informal settlement? How do you prove that the church/school's address you provide is actually "closest" to you?

The flaw in this whole registration process is becoming evident.

This whole thing is a huge waste of everyone's time and money!!!!! If you outlaw unregistered SIMS, only outlaws will have unregistered sims.

Like FICA, it only makes life more difficult for the hardworking, honest South African's.

So will they now not be selling prepaid sims at every second corner shop and PicknPay?

Because I can't see a store going through the trouble of verifying every person's particulars everytime they sell a 99c simcard.

Wow this is the biggest load of nonsense .

What if i am a tourist and i wanna get a SIM to use while i am in the country how much of a mission will that be ?

I hate the fact that even pharmacy's have to stock them .. WTF!!! Sick as a dog waiting for medication while Joe Soap is buying stuff for his cell phone taking up valuble time for a chemist... makes no sense.

Better learn to enjoy roaming rates ;) Even if you're a South African working overseas and come home for a bit, you'll have to get friends/family to sign up for you.

Hmmm.... maybe organised criminals could do something similar

What i don't understand is that to sign a contract with 1 of the providers, you have to provide all the details these morons are requesting? Why do we have to do it again?

wait, I thought this was just for pre-paid? Now this is sounding like even contract customers have to register?

All sims will need to be activated by a RICA compliant ref number.

You probably didn't give them proof-of-address up to the standard that they require. When I applied last I think they wanted to see a pay slip, but I never had to show bank statements that were physically posted (could show bank statements printed at the bank).

For sale: 20 RICA activated SIM Cards. R20 each.

You see, nothing prevents anybody from simply reselling these sim cards, which makes a mockery of the list.

Can you imagine what that database is worth for advertising agencies. I can see alot of junkmail coming our way.

Dunno what the law say but this info should only be available through court orders.
