Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it is revealed today.

Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.

I think the biggest different is the word violent.

In SA it's synonymous with rape/murder/GBH and so forth. However, any attack on another human being is violent. Now in SA most people don't even report fighting and so forth as it's minor in relation to the real problems we have. If normal assault cases in SA got the attention it needed SA would be top notch in that area for sure.
 
It would also help if the government actually published figures for S.A.

A bit sensationalist I'd say, not denying there is violent crime here but no way is it as bad as in S.A.

I live in SA and feel exactly the same way.
 
I think the the key is:

The most violent country in Europe: Britain

For them violence is when someone steal your seat on the subway or the football hooligans.

There will never be a comparison between Europe and Africa.
 
A pub fight is not considered violence here in SA as we do not use fists or knives to settle arguments ... we are just way to advanced for that :D

How do the other countries classify violent crimes? To me violent crimes are any crime that physically harms a person.

I don't think this is entirely accurate as like it has been said previously crimes in this country aren't nearly as reported as in the UK. Also their version of violent and ours are very different. With all this said, even if this is accurate we should be concerned with fixing the crime in our country instead of worrying where we are on some list.
 
They mentioned this on Sky this morning. But I agree - violent crimes in Europe != violent crimes in SA.
 
Isn't most of the crime centralised though? Ie: London is the main culprit? Pardon the pun :D

It's also a stunning example of how people fall for these stats and believe it's good reason to ignore the crime situation in S.A. because it's apparently better than in the U.K :rolleyes:
