ISPs run risk of R 5million RICA fine

Wait... first this was only for pre-paid Cellular Customers, then later we found out it also included Contract Customers.

Now we find out that the same crap applies to anyone who simply wants to buy a Gig of bandwidth from Axxess or WebAfrica?

So no more running up to Engen to buy a Gig without dragging along the last ten years of your life in paperwork?

WTF?????

And now we are all going to become cybercriminals cos at one point or another every single one of us have infringed copyright somewhere on the Internet????

Sheesh... welcome to 1984!!!

There seems to be a lot more to this than any one of us had originally thought

wait a minute - 5 million rand fines ?

seems like RICA is just a money making scheme.......

That's the first thing I thought of.
And yeah, pretty much seem like 1984, though I was 5 years old at the time.

Pretty soon the purchase of fax and copier paper will require identification as the Nigerians will revert to snail mail for their 419 scams.

Why the fsck do we have barcoded driver's licenses?
If they needed ID, then at least you should be able to walk up and just scan you **** and be gone.

Yup, RICA is the government admitting to the failure of the ID Book system.

Oh wait .. I already said that.

South African ID books are so pathetically easy to falsify. When are they going to introduce those smartcards they've been promising for years?

They did... that was your driver's License :D

There's a very good reason drivers licenses aren't accepted as proof of identity by a lot of organisations...they don't state your nationality and therefore aren't proof of citizenship.

I give up with our politicians. Forget the fact that we are in the dark ages already from a technological standpoint. Our Citizen Identification Infrastructure is in shambles because of dodgy and corrupt officials in Home Affairs.

What really cheeses me off, is the fact that we have to resort to 1984 tactics because ministers in the previous governments never did their jobs properly? Like WTF? I mean how ignorant are our law makers to realize that they are moving SA backwards instead of progressing in a forward motion?

Eish.....???

An ID book is easy to falsify! So now you need proof of residence as well! Good luck forging a rental account; from what I hear, you need a "laser printer". Where would you ever find one of those?

No, it was always for all SIMs.

I got myself RICA'd this morning. Took 15 mins including waiting in the two-person queue. I did all four SIMs I have. The proof of address that I took was my latest statement from my bank - I'm not sure why you think you need ten years of paperwork.

I'm also not familiar with pre-paid data, but surely you don't need a SIM every time.

I'm not overly excited about the reasons for RICA - but let's not exaggerate how difficult it is to comply.
