Online, non-online individuals differ

FYI.. the opposite of "online" is "offline"...

I am not sure if "non-online" is really a word I would use to describe offline people :D

I'm surprised the study didn't mention the rather obvious link between a person's level of education and their online presence.

I think the link is money.

The vast majority of "online" South Africans are middle-class or richer. Hence the gym memberships, credit cards and acupuncturists.

I doesn't matter if you eliminate age, race and gender if you're still using a variable linked directly to income.

Money -> Education -> Online
 
Education level, not so much. You get people who are in the artisan & service trades who didn't do matric but are extremely well off. People who didn't finish school and have their own successful businesses (plumbers, mechanics, farmers, dry cleaners) or family businesses (some manufacturers/factories, restaurants, cafes etc) are middle class or higher and have a lifestyle well above those of us with degrees.

I think a direct correlation with money, rather than education, is the key factor.
 
I don't know how they designed this study, but this made me laugh. Yes, correlation doesn't imply causation but err...

State of mental health
Turning to mental health, the study suggested that 43% of online South Africans had visited a psychologist or psychiatrist compared with only eight percent of non-online South Africans.

Belief in life on other planets
When it came to life on other planets, the online community took the lead with over 44% of online individuals surveyed believing in the existence of life on other planets compared with just over 26% of non-online South Africans.


:cool: Just sayin.

It would be interesting to know if they went further to ask if the respondents were more inclined to believe in intelligent, sentient life on other planets vs micro-organisms/one celled vs pre-cursors to life eg primordial goop with amino acids etc.

I think its more likely that people higher up on Maslow's hierarchy have the luxury of entertaining existential questions, trying to find themselves, think of themselves in the context of a huge universe and have the resources to spend on healing mental trauma. While the people lower down are more occupied with survival, food, shelter, security etc.
