Get Via The Phone

Transform your 3G-enabled cellphone into an instant modem and access the Internet whenever and wherever you need it. All you need to get started is a 3G-enabled cellphone with a USB cable, a Vodacom SIM card, and a laptop or PC running Microsoft Windows Vista/XP SP2.

If you have an alternative way to connect to the Internet, you can download the Via The Phone Connection Manager software, from Vodacom's website - simply click here or visit your nearest Vodacom dealer to buy a USB Smart Plug on which the software is pre-loaded. Just insert the USB Smart Plug into the USB slot of your PC and you'll be connected to the Internet Via The Phone in no time.

Install the software on your desktop or laptop PC
Then simply use your USB cable to connect your 3G cellphone to your PC via the USB port, and establish an Internet connection.

OR

Purchase a preloaded Via The Phone USB Smart Plug from your nearest participating Vodacom dealer (This USB includes 2GB flash memory).
Then use your USB cable to connect your cellphone and your PC or laptop. When you insert the USB Smart Plug into the USB slot of your PC, the Via The Phone Connection Manager software will automatically install and an Internet connection will be established.

You will need the following in order to use the Via The Phone Connection Manager software to connect to the Internet:
A 3G-enabled cellphone with USB data cable;
A laptop or PC running Microsoft Windows Vista / XP SP2 with the Via The Phone Connection Manager software installed / PC Suite CD;
A Vodacom SIM card

Please note: You do not need to change any setting on your cellphone. Just plug or download and go online!

Access the Internet whenever you want - check emails, surf the Internet - if you use a 3G cellphone, you'll be able to make and receive voice calls and send and receive SMSs while connected to the Internet, using Via The Phone.

Please note: If you are using a 2.5G cellphone, you will not be able to make or receive calls while you are connected to the Internet using Via The Phone.

Alternative Options

If you have purchased a 3G-enabled or GPRS-enabled cellphone, that is not on the compatible Via The Phone compatible cellphone list, you may still be able to use your cellphone as a modem to connect to the Internet. Most cellphone suppliers provide software and connectivity options (USB cable, Bluetooth) with the cellphone that allows you to establish and Internet connection via your cellphone from your PC.

Connect now using the PC Suite included with your cellphone:
Install the PC Suite software from the CD included with your cellphone;
Launch the software and make sure it detects your cellphone through the USB cable provided (or using Bluetooth);
Select the appropriate "Internet" option from the menu and establish a connection;
The software will automatically detect your Vodacom SIM card and connect you to the Internet;
You may have to create a manual (APN) connection.

Call Vodacom's dedicated Data Centre for assistance on 155, free from your Vodacom cellphone or 082 155 from any other phone.

This application has solved most of my problems

Just installed it on Windows 7 RC

Pretty cool, installation just took a bit long for my liking, but it connected fine with a N70.

I fell upon this app by accident

It works very well on my N70me

The thing I like is that you can see you "true" incomming and out going speed whiles you surf.

I'm not going to be popular for saying this, but in Linux, I plug in my Nokia E51 and there I go. No drivers, no nothing.

Same in windows but some of the nokia handsets (n70) connecting that way when they drop from Edge to Gprs they drop the connection or timeouts but there is something in this app that is stopping the drops/timeouts and I have see an improvement in browsing speeds

Uh yea...why on earth would you want to go through the trouble of buying things and installing third party software when your phone by default can do it? Looks like spam to me

What fricken spam? This application is made by Vodafone, it even shows me how much data I've used in the connected session.

I'm connected right now to the net using my phone as a modem. I'm using a Sony Ericsson W850i, but it's slow, 364kbps. I'm looking to buy a phone with faster internet connection, something with a download speed of a minimum of 3,6 Mbps. What phones are those?

Im using my 5800 express as a modem,and although many phones have this feature as well,this phone is pretty darn quick.Better then average and wlan is a bonus!

Speaking of wlan. There is software out there for both Symbian and Windows Mobile smartphones that allow you to use your phone as a wireless access point. Much faster than bluetooth.
