New Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda has treated himself to a pair of German luxury cars, one to use in Pretoria and the other in Cape Town.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question, posed by the Democratic Alliance, he said the new vehicles - both 2009 BMW 750i models - cost R1 135 500 each.

His reply also reveals the cars are fitted with R148,400 worth of extras, including, in the Pretoria-based vehicle, a R23 400 "rear-seat entertainment" system and a R5 600 "high-gloss satin chrome" paint job.

Nyanda said the existing official vehicles available for him had either done more than 120 000km, or were more than five years old, and in terms of the Cabinet-approved Ministerial Handbook he was entitled to new ones.

"The vehicle for use in Cape Town was nine years old, and had reached 115 072km. The vehicle for use in Pretoria was four years old, and had reached 137 194km," he said.

His new Pretoria vehicle has an array of extra features.

These include a R35 800 "innovation's package inclusive of... rear view camera, ceramic surround for controls, ambient interior lighting, adaptive headlights, high beam assist, lane departure warning [and] lane change warning".

Its Cape Town twin is fitted with a three-spoke leather steering wheel. It too has a rear-view camera.

In a statement on Thursday, DA communications spokeswoman Lindiwe Mazibuko described the purchase of the vehicles as "frivolous and a massive waste of public money".

Her party would be submitting follow-up questions on the matter.

"During this time of economic crisis when hundreds of thousands of ordinary South Africans are losing their jobs and businesses across the country are shutting down, government should be setting the tone for austerity and sound financial management," she said. - Sapa

If you had any hopes that the new minister had plans for the man in the street, it's time to re-think. :D

Minister of telecoms spends almost 2 mil on cars

No, no - blame apartheid.

Whites are to blame for everything - even the corrupt blacks :)

Oh... And the cars that wannabe-colonialist/imperialist **** is driving ;)

And its not like he is gonna make telecoms cheaper either. :(

I've got one in my car. No, not a secretary or prostitute - a camera. Comes up on the SatNav display together with guidelines when you put the car into reverse. Great for reverse parking. The poor minister won't have to crane his neck while going backwards. Very useful, as our ministers spend a lot of their time going backwards.

...Great for reverse parking. The poor minister won't have to crane his neck while going backwards. ...

except i'd imagine the honourable minister to have a driver, who at least is expected to know how to park.

this is the benefit of having an ignorant electorate whose prime purpose in life is to vote, and vanish thereafter: no one to hold the elected accountable. surely spending so much public funds on one car is outrageous, but 2?

well, at least you know he is going to be very comfortable while reading "IT for dummies" :D

Where are all those ANC supporters, who say we should give the government a chance to govern? Where are all those people who say 15 years is not long enough for them to sort out the country?

****ing disgusting...

Ya that's a total waste of money i agree. I can understand him needing to replace the cars but to fork out so much money on top of the range bmw's? That's outrageous. I wonder if Zuma will say anything or will it just get swept under the carpet?

Hi Minister

Is that the reason why the fee of TV Lic. increase?

From who don't want to pay TV Licence Fee
