Give your views on Telkom Media sale

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa), anxious to avoid a repeat of the embarrassment that followed the sale of Vodacom shares to Vodafone, will invite public comment on the sale of struggling pay TV licence holder Telkom Media to a Chinese-led consortium.
 
The company should first of all, have been offered to local buyer.

The same happened with Telkom when it was partially sold to the yanks - who put up prices and screwed the public - and then sold it back again at a massive profit.

It looks like greed is taking over again. I really think that the family jewels (to be) should not be sold to outsiders.
 
I voted NO.

I am sure that Telkom can obtain a higher price than what is currently on the table.
 
Not to rap SA Business but I trust the Chinese more to get it up and running than SA and just maybe give us good prices as well.
 
+1 for the Chinese.Been doing business with them for a long time,they don't give a ****.They'll use mafia style tactics and every loophole they can find to get the content they need to compete.Exactly the type of monster we need to take on Nochoice.
 
why is ICASA asking for comment?

About what?

If they should apply the law regarding direct or indirect ownership? If the current government's Chinese friends should be exempt from our laws?

The sale is illegal.
 
Who cares, 2 bad choices to choose from is better than no choice. Any competition is better than nothing. It's not like Telkom was actually doing anything with their pay-tv license anyway?? sell sell sell.

Even if they are pathetic in competition to d-suck-you-dry-tv, it will stimulate competion in the long term. Remember that back when M-net originally launched it was pretty much only one, semi decent channel & nothing else!

My vote is 'NO'!!! :mad:

It's more than just price to me. It is also about the Chinese slowly buying up AFRICA 'for a song', and nobody's doing a thing to stop them.

They're buying up Africa all over the place (Sudan, Zim, etc) and it appears to be happing here too.

Mark my words, this is bad news if it goes ahead!
 
Ah.. vice-versa, naspers (multichoice / dstv holding co) has bought up chunks of the far east as well.

In May 2001, the group acquired a 46.5% interest in Tencent, the operator of an instant messaging platform in China

In August 2006, MIH Print Media Holdings Limited (“MIH Print Media”) acquired a 20.2% interest in Titan, a leading company in the field of Chinese sports publishing for a cash consideration of approximately Rand 114.5 million.

Thailand’s leading pay-television operator, and MKSC World Dot Com Co.(“MKSC”), a leading Thai ISP.

December 2004, Naspers acquired a 9.9% interest in the Beijing Media Corporation (“BMC”) for a cash consideration of Rand 273.2 million.

I think all those who applied and got licences should be held accountable to launch their services no matter what, if they don’t they should get a hefty fine.
 
More inroads into Africa for the Chinese, look at Bob in bed with the Chinese, Zambia and Chinese (Textile plants, TAZAR railways)

Stop being so paranoid.Its sometimes wise to jump in bed with your "enemy".Every company or country have their own agendas when going into agreements with others.You just make sure to manage the "risk" to favour you.Its pay-tv,a luxury,not something essential like...power plants.

You can be sure that the Chinese will make sure they manage the risk to favour themselves... what makes you think think our Government will be the smart ones in the deal? :rolleyes:

Well,its a risk i'm willing to take.We can always make up a law and take away their licence if the **** hits the fan.:)

We need them now,we can kick them out later.That's how business works.

We desparately need competition both for price and for choice. The Chinese have a good track record on lowering prices and bringing a lot of choice. ICASA, the regulator needs to ensure that there is competition and also that the regulatory environment looks after the customer (us) for quality, price, fair play etc. If they do their job, then I say "Ni Hao" to more choice at lower prices.
