Thanx for the links - i'll check 'em out later today

Thanx RISA!

WTF ... these okes are smoking out of their brains. If you can legally buy music online cheaper than an S.A site, why not???

I think that the guy selling fake DVDs/CDs on the corner of the road, is much more off a threat than some websites, especially if you consider the percentage of people with broadband access.

Music piracy and local ISPs

ISPA and local ISPs tell Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) to take a hike about blocking music download websites

ISPA.. you rock! Keep the pipes clean!

What are the record lables that RISA represents in South Africa?.. I am going to try educate friends and family to boycott any of the local labels that support them.

FYI.. neither of those sites are legal, they comply with both Russian and South African law. They just dont comply with retarded American "sell my mother for profit" laws.

The legality of the Russian sites are debatable, at best. They're exploiting some loophole in Russian law and they themselves state that the music may not be legal outside of Russia: they just don't care.

Anyway, this part was beautiful:

These prices are significantly lower than local online music outlets.

Someone forgot to mention that ALL, and I wish I could make the font flash and throw grenades at this point, but ALL of SA's online music outlets sells DRM-locked music. So, RISA, blow it out your @ss. Why don't you guys do something constructive about the appalling situation in South Africa? Why don't you guys get off your fricking high IPR horse and let someone like iTunes or Amazon.com sell music here and do it properly, you bunch of half-wit tight-fisted retards?

Juice

Juice is all for paying for music, just not DRM-locked cr@p.

+1. There was an attempt to take down gomusic.ru when they were selling music based on size/quality rather than a fixed price per track. They modified their store to sell music by track rather than size, and everyone was happy.

RiSA just keeps on planking its own name. Please carry on!

please explain

Well Russian law has their own copyright laws.. way more reasonable than the american ones. By Russian law those site owners have bought the music and can legally do with it as they want. Including reselling it. They are complying with their law.

We as South Africans are purchasing legal (now) Russian copyright material at the price they ask for and in complience with their laws.

We are not breaking any of our laws obtaining that material as it comes from a legal copyright holder. (Afaik.. though I would have to see particular law on this and how the legal owner is defined .. and by who defines that legal owner to be sure)

Just cause America/RIAA/RISA dont accept those laws doesnt make it any less legal. Neither Russia or South Africa need to bow down to American policies.

Its not a loophole.. its a very clear law theyre abiding by.

Basically their law states that if you buy XYZ .. you own XYZ and can basically do with it as you want. If you want to resell it, then you need to give money to their copyright regulator and alls good.

This is what those sites do. Its not a loophole, its a defined law.

sharing is caring, I will never pay money for pirated stuff tho

Trying to stop people buying cheaper anything online is like screaming at a hurricane, just going to hurt your throat and nothing is going to change. RISA needs to realise that people will just P2P it if they block these sites. Artists get nada then

WELL DONE ISPA.
And can I second the request for a list of record companies RISA represents? I'm one of the few people I know who still buys new CDs, but that's about to stop.
You hear that RISA? You see the consequences of your actions?
F---tards

Just in case RiSA cares, I've spent over R750 on music at gomusic.ru. That's 100x more money than I've EVER spent on buying a local CD from a store here.

I have to agree with this totally. If iTunes or Amazon were here locally, I would not have a problem buying the music. It is exactly what say needs to put this to bed for me.

Thousands of Ipods in the country and people put music on them illegally. Imagine people could get just the choice at the moment to put legal music on. They could get money they were never getting before.
