So I'm sitting at terminal 3 with a knackered 400d in my bag and seriously considering a 50D with the 17-85mm IS lens. (£850).

Quickly now.

Is it worth it?

I hope I'm not too late - was out having some wicked Southall curry.

At £850 the lens is practically free, so yes, good deal. The cheapest price on the body I know of at the moment is £810. So yes, good deal.

Agree with Koffie. Cheapest I could find was around £1000 for the 17-85 kit, £825 for the body and £400 for the 17-85. If I had my choice, I'd rather have the Tamron 17-50, but if you're getting the 17-85 for free, take it.

Out of context quote from Bwana himself :):

Well, thank goodness that's settled then. So which lens it going to be then??;)
I guess I should have defined "knackered"?

bwana, where is that? Dixons?
yeah - but they were out of stock for that kit and only had another one which included a remote for a hair over £1000. I'm in Berlin in a little over a week so I check again then.

I need something before then though. :o

Also kit? Which one? I figure any kit lens you get you'll probably sell off, so does it really matter?

So you're in the UK now? Why not just get it here then? Camera World often has demo units for cheaper, and they also spit the kits, so you can get the body a little cheaper. To that end they have a 5DmkII for under £2k. I see there's also a 40D+17-85 kit for £580 which is still decent. Anyway, it's worth stopping by.

Was in the UK - back in SA. My 400D only started having issues my penultimate day there when I was in Canterbury so the 50D seemed like a good idea at the time.

And yes - the £1000 one was also the kit.

Aah right. I should have known - there's not camera shop in the T3 arrival area :)

And yes - the £1000 one was also the kit.

That's about £90 cheaper than the next best price, so still good.

The schlep of having to sell off the extras was enough of a deterrent. They were trying to sell the demo £850 model for £650 but it had received some serious abuse.

Pity the kit lenses are all the ones I'm not interested in. If they bundled it with a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, it would have been a no-brainer for me.
