Firefox uses more bandwidth than IE?

never heard of this happening. A web page is a web page is a web page.

If he is using the Gmail/Greader notifier, it uses quite a bit of bandwidth as it's costantly polling the servers for updates.

Maybe it's the fact that when he browses the net it goes so fast that it seems to consume more bandwidth in Firefox. My advise, install adblock.

Microsoft indoctrinate user looking for a placebo excuse to defend the Microsoft way?

What if IE had a bunch of already cached temp internet files and Firefox had to do it for the first time so it will use more bandwidth the first month.

Actually not. He is happy with FF and admitted after 1 day that it is superior to IE.

So no one thinks my idea of Temporary Internet Files could be the source of the issue? If you have IE 6 set to only check for new version of pages say Automatically or Never, then surely there would be some local caching.

And if you only browse the same sites all the time, couldn't this explain the bandwidth usage.

Ok then.. either updates or get an addon that makes use of the local cache more like "bettercache"

Tools - Options - Advanced - Network
You can increase the disk cache size. IE defaults to a gig, so maybe bump it up to 2-300MB and see if that helps?

Nothing techical but here's some info about precaching

more here
With this feature turned on, Firefox looks at links on the currently displayed page and begins to download the pages in a cache file in the background. This way, if you click on one of those links the browser appears to be fast since the page was already downloaded.

To disable this option, start up Firefox on your system and type in “about:config” in the address bar and press Enter. Scroll down until you find the line that says, “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers“. Double-click on that line and change the value from -1 to 0 then click OK.

hmmm i have to use IE7 due to certain enterprise software that only runs on IE. FF loads up pages at about 300% the speed IE does.

Your friend prob just browsed faster through the month and used more bandwidth cos he was able to view more pages thant with IE.

Cool thanks.

Another site says you must set network.prefetch-next = false in about:config.

I'll do both.

I'd say that one makes more sense than browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers, who knows.
