GAME have a special this week on the Nikon D60 with 18-55 kit lens for R4999. Is it worth it as a first DSLR ?

I currently have a Nikon F60 with 28-80 and 70-300, but it's time for a DSLR. I know my lenses won't fit on the D60 and I would really like the D90, but it's just too expensive at the moment.

Well yes, but I'd rather get this:

Its the D3000, the D60's replacement.

For an extra R1000 you get:
1. A newer camera with bigger LCD, 11 point AF(vs 3 point on the D60)
2. A VR lens(the one on that D60 is not VR - non image stabilized)
3. Nikon Camera Bag
4. 2GB memory Card

Good points, thanks. Actually I'll be in Dubai the first week of October so I may find something even cheaper there. (Although Dubai is not the bargain it used to be.)

I get itchy when I see what looks like a good deal on dSLRs. I really want to upgrade from film, but I don't want to break the bank.

Wow this is nice. I have the D60 and its very nice imo but I would pay the 1k extra with a smile for the 11 point AF and the VR lense... Also the bags go for around R400 so you are in a sense paying the same price for the bodies.

Eish got a tough decision. The d3000 or a new kite :/

Nope, and to think the camera is half the price of the kite!

actually your old nikkor lenses will fit the d60, you won't have auto focus but they will fit and work on the d60.
i am assuming that since they will fit the d60 they will also fit on the d3000.
just to let you know nikon officially discontinued the d60 this past week, but don't let that steer you away from it. it is a brilliant starter dslr but i have to agree with the other posters and say if you can afford the d3000 then purchase it over the d60.

I don't know much bout the Nikon D60 or the D3000 but I have a Nikon D80 which has been discontinued to make way for the Nikon D90 but I think its a great starter DSLR. I have one and I'm studying photography with it... Your old lenses will autofocus with this camera...

Thanks you're right. I should've been clearer when I said won't fit, I meant won't AF. As I mentioned before I have a film SLR and 99.9% of the pictures are taken with AF on Program mode, usually I only adjust the shutter or aperture. Since the camera will also be used by my wife, AF is a pretty big deal for me. Perhaps a dSLR will make us use the manual mode more, with film you have to make notes of your setting all the time to see what the effect were after development.

Just bought the D3000 kit at joburg airport for R5499, excl the mem card. My first dslr :)
