Hi All... again... forgive this, need a rant of sorts.

A bit of a strange issue here. On Saturday a family member's Cybersmart ADSL stopped working. Sunday, she reported the error to CS helpdesk who informed her that all is fine, must be equipment failure on her end. Advised her to change the POTS filters.

She did. No luck. Phoned again. Was advised to change the cables.

She did, again, no luck. Could not connect. CS helpdesk then advised that her Mecer router was the fault, needed to be replaced. Strange, 2 weeks out of warranty too. She asked if the fault could not be a line fault, and was assured that "everything here is fine, it is equipment on your side, replace the router".

Come Monday, she did just that. Purchased new Netgear DM111P ADSL 2+ Ethernet Modem. Still no luck. Phoned Cybersmart again... was told AGAIN it is equipment fault. She returned the Netgear Modem, and salesperson suggested she try a new Mecer as the one she has.

Fine... this she does. Still does not work. Calls me. I go over and my two Mecer routers also do not work. I call Cybersmart who now log a fault with Telkom. Line does not sync.

Aanywaaaay. Telkom techie rocks up Tuesday morning and spends 2 hours testing at her house. No problem, but still will not sync. Off he goes to check the exchange. Two Telkom vans now rock up an hour later and still none of the Mecer routers want to sync. Telkom pulls out a white Telkom router and it syncs. Telkom techs suggest that the Mecer routers are all crap and she should have kept the Netgear. Off they go.

She phones Cybersmart again. No fault their side they say, but will escalate it. She then goes back to the store, returns the Mecer and now purchases a
Netgear DG834GT ADSL Router.

I connect it... set it up. Nada. No line sync. I try the Mecer's of mine again. Nada... nothing. I reconnect the Netgear and leave it.

30 minutes later.. as if by magic the Netgear is now syncing and working. None of the Mecer's are. So... R1000+ = good and R300+ = bad.

Tomorrow is another day... I suggest she waits for the feedback from CS and Telkom.

Strange strange day.

Or perhaps it is this at play from their terms and conditions?

Should we find that we are not your only ADSL provider, we will degrade your service

Used Mweb modem + account on her line last week.

Hmmmmmm....

Which terms and conditions?

Update: Her new Netgear is still working. None of the Mecer routers will sync on her line, but do on mine. She says that the fault is still logged as not resolved. Will have to just wait I guess..... very muddling indeed.

Mecer routers have the incorrect settings by default, I had to phone Telkom to get them.

If the line is not syncing its a Telkom issue, nothing to do with your ISP. You can sync without a service provider, its either the router is broken or telkom has a problem. The sync is the connection to the ADSL network

The fact that it just connected one day means that it was most likely a line problem.

Hi Nerfherder....

NONE of the Mecer modems work on her line. I have two and I am also with Cybersmart. I take her modem home and change login details and it works. I take mine to her, input her login details, and they do not work. The Netgear works on her line and mine.

She had been down since Saturday and only reconnected last night around 6pm. It was Cybersmart who insisted it is her router that is faulty. It was I that insisted it was a line fault. It is Telkom who has insisted it is not a line fault but a Mecer router issue.

It makes no difference what Mecer router I use on her line... they do not work and the Netgear does. Telkom has given her line a clean bill of health.

I am using her Mecer router now on my line with her settings and only the login details changed. it syncs and is functional.

As I said... strange.

I have been using a couple of ISP's other than my current CS one.
They have not degraded my service... YET :D

Can only be the line.

Clean bill of health from Telkom means nothing.

LOL. You are right. But, to her, it means having to spend R1400.00 to make something that is working work... if you know what I mean!

telkom always says line is good yet i always find line problems somewhere in their system so i think they all clueless :P

:erm: blaaislaai... are you a oneprice subscriber like her? I will do a test this weekend with other ISP accounts on her line and see if the Netgear then degrades!

;)

Yup indeed. And all ADSL subscribers are at their mercy.

So I guess then the Netgear has a better chipset or something that makes it more immune to the Telkom line fluctuations?

OR...

The Netgear is (tinfoil hats at the ready) more resistant to the degraded service from Cybersmart who detected another ISP used on her line?

well i got R900 aztech router and never experienced that problem only d/cs when theirs lightning :P not sure if it does have better chipset also

anyway how far you from exchange cause i'm under 2 km away

Dude... degraded service means that they would make the line slow... they have never actually done this.

Its impossible for an ISP to cause you not to sync !

The other thing that it could be us a faulty device on the same line, the first thing I always do is unplug everything else (phones faxes etc) and then try sync

Yup... done that. Nothing but the router. Telkom did the same. New POTS filters, new cables, new routers... still no closer to a solution.

I did actually mention that tinfoil hats were needed for the degraded service theory!:p All theories are welcome at this stage!

As said earlier.... I have insisted it is the line. Cybersmart are insisting it is the router. I am using the "faulty" router right now. Who should she believe? Cybersmart, Telkom or you guys?

She is just waiting for the fault resolution report from Cybersmart that will shed some light on the issue.

Unless they have specialised line-unsyncing switches installed, or 100 little vuvuzelas blasting line noise at random intervals along her line... I know this to perhaps be a fact... I have heard them when I attached an empty tin to the one end of her telephone cable! :D

You sync with the Telkom DSLAM at your exchange, not with their routers.

Nerfherder you bright little bulb you.... she has just been SMS'd with a "29 09 2009 changed DSLAM filter at exchange this morning" message update from Cybersmart.

So, now her Mecer modem should work again. Will try tomorrow. Still, R1400 for a DSLAM filter replacement...
