Ubuntu Karmic Koala beta available for download

Probably download it with my free WA bandwidth (if I ever get it lol).

Must admit though I'm really looking forward to 10.04.

ext4, LTS...it is definitely the one I will switch to as a main OS (still on 8.04 ATM and loving it).

I downloaded the last latest and my first ever Linux OS during the week. I am waiting for my new hard drive to check it out. I moving out from MS Windows. Does anyone know if Ubuntu can run games like BF2, AMAR and the likes?

Congratulations, welcome to the world of Linux. :D

You can run a lot of Windows games through WINE which despite what the guys running the WINE project say, can best be described as a Windows emulator. But be warned they can be slow and not all of them will work right away and may take some tweaking to get working properly. I know WoW works as does Warcraft3. I even read an article a while back (don't know if it was a hoax or not) where someone was running Crysis through Wine. I think the WINE wiki has a list of games officially supported through WINE somewhere on it.

You do need to make sacrifices and learn to approach things differently when you move to Linux. However once you get used to it I'm sure you'llenjoy it as much as we all do.

I don't know if WINE currently supports DirectX10 though I haven't been following it.

EDIT: Found the application database. It should tell you whether or not BF2 will run:

If by "BFII" you mean Star Wars Battlefront II then apparently it is supported but there are issues (see the post below mine by AntiThesis): http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=3803

Welcome :) Hope you'll have fun :D

I switched full time onto Ubuntu a couple months back and haven't been sad about it once. There are challenges but they're fun to solve ;)

As far as BF2 goes - looks like they've been trying since 2007 so it may well work according to this.

This is great, I can't wait to try the beta! Been using 9.04 for too long now :)

For some reason certain colours are off with my movies with 9.10, will have to reinstall the codecs. I don't watch a lot of content anyway so it's not such a big deal.

I can confirm that my audio has improved a lot.

Knowledge of ubuntu = 1% and even that might be optimistic. I'm situated in a smallish town and nobody uses anything other than Windows, as far as I'm aware off. I would like to try this version. I installed one of the older versions about 5 years ago. Did not have time to really test/learn/use it. I know this is the lazy way, but what is the difference between CD image and Desktop image? Is it that the CD image image are written to CD and then booted with the CD, but not actually installed, while the Desktop image are installed under a VMware virtual type software, along with your primary OS?

I'd say go with 9.04 for now or wait until 9.10 is out of beta... otherwise you may well hit bugs with the beta release.

Try get a copy of 9.04 and run it off the CD for a little to see how you like it. In my experience though it's only once you've installed it that you start fiddling and making it awesome.

The below post is to show that these new Ubuntu features are current features for people on Linux who are willing to compile/run sources where new packages are tested.

Some of the packages below I run already on my Debian Sid systems:

Upstart - Is there any detail on this. It seems to me to be an implementation of things like readahead and readearly.

Software Centre - OpenSUSE has had this for the last 6 years

GNOME - Impressive. This must be the cutting edge beta Gnome.

Ubuntu One file sharing - Sounds impressive. Have no idea as to what the underlying programs are.

Linux kernel 2.6.31 and new Intel video driver architecture - kernel 2.6.32-git already available. On most distros easy to build a new kernel.

I was running UXA on my intel VGA laptop some 3-6 months ago on Gentoo.

New ext4 filesystem now default - Welcome step this. Fedora and Ubuntu leading the way here. Although I have been installing new distros (including Debian) on ext4 since the beginning of the year. It has not been by default and needed at least kernel 2.6.28 to do.

Grub2 - Been using this for well over 3 months now. Even close to 6 months.

Yeah I think the reason people are happy about it is that it's all accessible to the random average person without too much effort. Ubuntu makes it at least a little easier to run alternatives to Windows - most other distros take a fair amount of setting up.
