I exist only in my own mind ...
On Capetalk, if nowhere else, but searching for any kind of reference as to what exactly this is, when it's going to happen and costs to sub are underwhelmingly available on Telkom's site or anywhere else!

The new network is there, but how it will reduce costs for the residential consumer is very debatable.

They are under a non-disclosure agreement. But some people should be getting a notice any day now :p

NGN is basically IP based. On some exchanges (depending on make), you can have xDSL card directly. Management of the exchanges are also IP based where is was x.25 previously. Capacity (subscribers) are also greatly increased. Can read the generic description here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_Generation_Networking

Its all great for them to be advertising this, but some more concrete information would be great.

It is mostly network related upgrades. New generation switches, including soft switches (VoIP). Hopefully they will also start rolling out mini-dslams to the curb, which of course increases your speed as the copper part is shorter.

Yeah I know what an NGN...

But advertising it, and not telling us exactly what it entails for us is a bit pointless IMO..

Even if its a bit of a splurb on their site or something rather than in the advert.

So far all we have is their advert and no concrete details of how far this NGN goes...

But they DID tell us what NGN is, didn't you see the advertisement? All the cars and schoolbusses flying around? Basically saying that we're going to be enjoying this technology only when flying cars are invented.... which makes alf's statement of upgrading the 3G network to 2G pretty much true.

Years ago I came up with, "Yesterday's technology today" as a slogan. This is when america had caller ID since the 80's yet we only had that luxury in the late 90's I believe...

Telkom can suck my big fat fake cock

Bear in mind your average listener hears "next generation" and "telkom" mentioned in an advert and they then associate Telkom with being forward thinking, advanced, cutting edge etc. It is a clever marketing ploy. Most listeners could not actually be bothered with what NGN actually entails....

NGN was necessary for 2010 requirements, I'm sure paid for by FIFA

Telkom was already upgrading since 2006/2007. AFAIK, they are paying for it themselves.

I think Telkom is going to suprise us in future. I activated ADSL the other day and it took lees then a week to complete. Also had a problem so I phoned the support line and the call was picked up in less than a second.
