Telkom launches City to City IPLC service

to compete effectively against SEACOM it will have to be priced similarly to SEACOM's STM-1 cost which ranges between R 698 000 (one year lease) and R 493 000 (five year lease) per month.

Could be that my sums are wrong
Should be attractive for call centers

I like this bit:
Plans for the service include more foreign destinations, and the expansion of the national network to include Carrier Neutral Facilities. The half-circuit IPLC connection is still available and Telkom plans to expand their IPLC portfolio in future.

uhm.. i thought they meant that cost per month.. i.e. if you have a 5yr lease..
R493k / (155) = R3 180.64 per 1Mb/s a month(dedicated/no contention)

else if it was as cheap as kilo's says then everyone would dump adsl + other contented services(shaped etc) tomorrow ;)

telkom isnt the rip off. the ISP's are the rip off... SAT3/ WITH SAFE redundancy is actually cheaper than SEACOM.

So howabout the ISP's stop blaming telkom for high internet rates and start offering cheaper bandwidth
 
Is this the next generation network that Telkom has been advertising so much lately (Heard some ads on RSG etc.)

No see what happens when telkom gets competition. now we need LLU so telkom can get competition on the ADSL

The way I see this is that you would need around 2200 customers minimum to offer TRUE uncapped at R450 a month and still make a very nice FAT profit!!

Calculation for 155 Mb circuit = R698k/155Mb = R4503 per 1 Mb/s per month (one year lease). based on those
prices I wonder the SAIX TDIS Silver & Gold Prices to Business would be for 1 Mb/s
 
While it's good that competition's forcing Telkom to lower prices, we're still screw-ed until Local Loop Unbundling!
 
Yeah, I'm on Webafrica's trial, which is Seacom bandwidth, and latency (and streaming) on Xbox Live is WAY better (so far, at least)

But this is only to their datacentre in Jo'burg? You then have to factor in the infrastructure costs of getting this bandwidth to the client. If it is just one business - it's less of a problem. If it's to a bunch of ADSL users, then you have to get IPConnect from Telkom, which is super expensive.

So it looks like the prices of international data have come down rather nicely... now we need to pressure Telkom to allow ISPs to get access to their ADSL clients at a lower price.

My take on it anyway - have I missed anything?
 
thats just the thing.. Telkom + Saix = holding back everyone on adsl. like you say you have to factor in their IPConnect.. and then Saix i'm sure is priced accordingly. Hrm.. this is october right.. i wonder if there will be a price reduction on un/shapped accounts? else its looks more worth it to buy one of these for big places.
