TENET doubles international bandwidth with SEACOM

this is awesome. UCT almost doubled its bandwidth from 44mbps to 84mbps about two weeks ago.

The improvement has been VERY noticeable! Browsing on campus is a lot less frustrating now.

I actually clocked 6.5mbps on speedtest.net last weekend on campus:D

Thanks for the info Richard7. And there is more to come - I am sure students will start to experience good Internet with all the SEACOM bandwidth.

Well done to TENET as well.

students will never want to go home again! other than them this is of no use for other people

UFS had around 40 or so MBps available since August I think, double that which it had before august. Also, traffic isn't being blocked to social networking sites anymore! :)

What seems to have been missed in this article is that the GEN3 backbone runs over a Neotel VPN. The actual bandwidth increase to the various sites is thanks to Neotel, since the SANReN backbone isn't yet available. Very positive feedback - a change from the usual comments we see about Neotel.

How do i go about getting my private residence accredited as an academic institution? :p

But on a more serious note, great work tenet.

Damn straight - youtube videos load almost instantaneously now! :D

This is fantasmic news.
Now I am going to crawl back into my private cave of slow connectivity at home and sulk ;-)

/me wonders how many BayTSP emails TENET must accumulate with all that bandwidth :)

Pleasure rpm!

Just a note with regard to the article itself - while some of us may know who "Alston" refers to, I'm sure most who will read the article don't.

I couldn't find any reference to him earlier in the article (other than the quote at the end), so that may land up confusing the uninitiated readers.

*Grin* for those of you who are wondering who Andrew Alston is, that would be me!

Andrew

TENET & AfriHost bright stars in an otherwise dark firmament -- with the occasional "SuperNova"

Perhaps I need to go and sign up for another PostGrad ????:D

Lucky Students / Lecturers / Researchers

Would like to know if anything's changed at Wits

Just wanted to inform you all about how this upgrade translates in terms of the Wits University internet speed:

This test is done about 4:50 PM, during the peak traffic here.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/593998877.png

Download speed was 15.65M vs Upload speed of 7.84M

I did the similar test over the last weekend and then the download speed was around 30M
