Somewhere along the line my account number details for my credit card were either entered incorrectly or they were processed incorrectly. In either case I have some issues with their signup procedure I beleive I should make others aware of.

1. The account is advertised as having immediate activation. This is true ...... only if you are an existing account holder with them, otherwise you need to then fax or email them a copy of your ID document which then needs to be vetted by their legal department. Firstly I dont have internet access (the reason I am buying) so I cant email my document. Secondly - how many people have a fax machine. This meant that it took about 4 hours and quite a bit of trouble to actualy get my account activated. I run a business and if there are any other users who actualy rely on their internet connection in order to be able to serve their customers I would keep this in mind.

2. Most other online sellers I have had dealings with will verify credit card details immediatly and bill your account immediatly. Why does Afrihost not use this standard procedure?

3. The attitude and service of the support staff is also poor. In order to find out why my connection was not authenticating the following day I had to send and SMS to them in order to request a callback. They have no direct number. This took in the order of 3- 4 Hours upon which I was informed of the problem. I spoke to the supervisor, Warren, who informed me that the only option was to make an EFT payment to get the account activated. I explained to him that I do not have internet access to make the EFT payment as they had suspended it and asked him how he does his EFT payment. Apparently Warren goes into the bank to make all of his EFT payments! No wonder they have the problems they do .

He suggested I go to the bank and make the deposit. Erm this is at 1 o'clock on a saturday .... My bank doesnt operate at those hours I am afraid. Come to think of it, I dont know many that do.

I also recieved an email from him in a tone that I did not appreciate.

Warm regards.

A little too many well wishes and the smilies makes the communication seem disingenuous and sarcastic

Long story short if you need an account in a hurry and 24 hour quick support don't go to Afrihost.

With fairness to Afri, getting your ID and having it verified is the right thing to do and I don't mind waiting a bit longer as this is SA after all.

I do agree it is much easier with some others but it doesn't really bother me too much.

Well my account was active within 30 mins of signing up on a Monday morning.

Don't you have an copy of your ID on the PC? my account got activated within 10min after signing up and emailing my ID. This is service I never had with WA before. And this was on a Saturday afternoon

If I understand correctly due to RICA account verification is going to be the norm going forward?

standard practice afaik even webafrica does verification via your ID.

it says hi, thanks and how to cancel ? what was your email or question towards them ?

Long story short if you need an account in a hurry and 24 hour quick support don't go to Afrihost.
not true, mine was done withing 2 hours and i can assure you many others here had exactly the same experience. in fact i had only but great service from them during and outside of office hours, they have but bent over to accommodate my weird questions and requests.

If I understand correctly due to RICA account verification is going to be the norm going forward?
afaik it is and that is why for example both afrihost and webafrica does this.

My account got activated within 30 minutes at 2AM in the morning, including the time taken to email and verify a copy of my id to them.
So far I'm loving Afrihost.

A business that doesn't have fax...****e that's weird

So you're complaining that law requires verification by ID,which you aren't prepared for and as such it should be removed.

Then you complain they didn't deduct immediately,in which case I refer you to some ISPs who need the first month's payment done via EFT and then debit order thereafter

Then we complain at how to make payments at 1 on a saturday...well perhaps you shouldn't be signing up for anything out of regular business hours eh,and with this I mean giving room for a support call aswell as the signup, not a friday afternoon

Jeesh

geez here we go found to official wa notice link, would be nice to have the actual rica article.
Please be advised that effective 12 February there will be some minor changes to the client signup process.

All new signups will be required to provide one of the following;

1. South African ID Number
2. Passport Number
3. Company Registration Number

This information is required to lower the risk of fraudulent occurrences, and in so doing offer a better service.

Byrd... you just stepped on all the "i love afrihost its is the next coming" peoples toes. trust me i've been there. This board might aswell be, Mybb in partnership with afrihost.

so if you have a problem with them move on like i did, i got R30 a gig from my old ISP after chatting to them and i kept the quality service i expect.

I had completely the opposite experience, I sent them dozens of mails, all were answered promptly and in a friendly, professional manner.
I activated my account at about 1 in the morning, then went to bed, the next day it was working, so im not sure how long it took, so cant comment there
luckily I still had my axxess account running so I could email my id- but I can understand this, its standard practice to give proof of identity, so for me wasn't a huge deal
for those who say you get what you pay for, I have got nothing but good things to say about afrihost, they have been as good if not better than any other service I have ever had, plus im able to surf for a reasonable amount of money- im extremely happy and have not looked back since...

NO FAX MACHINE!!!, what kind of business does business without a fax machine:rolleyes:

well to honest there is no fax machine in our unit as we are software developers and never use it, so i went to the library in the company to have my id faxed off.

Another negative Afrihost thread?

*sigh*

Kthxbye
Yup - Maybe there is a reason for this? Like terrible service?

Err, yes I do - but you seem to have the same logic as the guys at Afrihost - How do you email - when YOU HAVE NO INTERNET ACCESS YET?

Ah - but they dont promise immediate activation do they? Did I get immediate activation as promised or was it delayed activation?

Erm yes I did, but they only operate in office hours!

ok so you couldn't pay via credit as you have not been ID-ed how else apart form eft are you to pay the merchant ?
This is incorrect - I did not say this. Read again. ID is for RICA, not payment. If I had an account and wanted to forge an ID to match the details for that bank account it wouldn't take a rocket scientist.

it says hi, thanks and how to cancel ? what was your email or question towards them ?
I did not send them an email at all. See the irony? It was simply the verbal communication I described above. It is the tone I am refering to.

2 hours is still unnacceptable when you are expecting "immediate activation". When I joined with Webafrica sometime ago, they allowed me to logon and email them my documents. Afrihost did not accomodate any of my requests and it seems others here are also unhappy with them

I know, and knew that would happen. Still maybe somebody will be warned.

Seems like a lot of people here are bending for Afrihost - maybe a reciprocal thing :D

after verification, which part don't you understand ?

Erm yes I did, but they only operate in office hours!
well then it was either a pm, sms or online.

well they can't accept payment via credit if it is not verified. how else are they to know it is not a fraudulent credit card ?

once again what was your original query before you have received the email.
