Most popular cellphone brands revealed

No surprises there. Nokia make good phones for the most part. Samsung phones are disastrous, sad to say, their software is clunky and un-intuitive. I wouldn't mind an iPhone in its current form, but all the control and DRM and Nazi business policy is a major turn-off. My next phone will hopefully be an android phone.

anybody on this forum own a motorola? seriously, i can't believe they still sell phones. shame.
 
yes, i've heard a number of sources quoting the 100%+ figure. it's entirely possible if you think that even the dustbin guy has a phone and that most people i know have more than one phone. what it probably means is that if you took all the phones in use on the networks and divided it by the amount of people in the country, you'd arrive at that figure. not that every newborn baby comes with a phone in their hand.

MTN has even suggested that the number may soon be as high as 130% due to multiple handsets. The 100% penetration figure is however accepted as fact in SA.

The really interesting figures are based on the habits of each user according to income level - article to come through on that in the next few days:)

I wonder if this RICA thing (or what ever its called) (where a SIM card must be registered) will have an effect on this +100% figure??
 
I have been a happy Nokia user for a while now. Would be difficult now to got to anything else.

Edit: Motorola has been so quiet, I would have thought they disappeared from the local market. Samsung seems like they have been making a good name for themselves. The Omnia and Jet appear to be quite good.

Somehow I wonder if this research was done based on the cell phones already being used out there, and not on what has actually been sold in the last year. So for a different view here is what we have sold in the last year.

We (2 cellular outlets) haven't sold a motorola in over a year, not one. (Actually all their reps were retrenched a year ago, the company all but died here in SA) But before that the big chain stores had lots of cheapy specials for them. Something like R99 a phone - they sold thousands. This goes back at least 2 years, but I guess they may still be in circulation.

Blackberry is climbing slowly now, thanks to a more affordable model and better pricing on the service... becoming big in the "coo - girl" (spelling?)market.

Samsung is flying with the star, but nokia still has the edge because of their range. Samsung has just brought out a whole new range to match tho, so we watch. Don't think their upper range will do to well tho, they try to copy iphone and it just cannot be done.

If iphone was cheaper, it would be a killer.

HTC - only for gadget techie's, and then few and far between. Since the tytan it has died! Will watch the hero closely but so far still quiet.

LG have 1 model that is moving, and sony ericsson is trying hard, but haven't had a winner in a while.

As for vodafone, they have all of 2 models that we sold, but at R199 and R299 I guess like motorola, there could be a few out there. Sales have dried up this year tho.

This is based on what we have sold over the last year, not any scientific research... just by the way.

HTC have been too aloof. Their product works more like a computer than a phone, so they need to get into the stores and train the sales people, and then supply demo units to show clients. Technology scares alot of people and it scares even the tech savvy staff when it comes to HTC.
