Telkom plans to target mobile market

Do you think there is a place for a fourth mobile operator in SA?

Though I wouldn't use Telkom personally, more competition is good for us lowly consumers.

Exactly why I voted YES. There is no love lost between VC/MTN/TKG so competition should be the key to lower prices!
Telkom's pricing is already lower than Vodacom and MTN, and if they gain traction in the market it may well mean that MTN and Vodacom will have to respond. Telkom's performance in terms of market share has been very poor so far, but one hopes they will sort out any problems and start to compete more effectively.

I was reading The Business Report the other day - they had an article about TKM. I couldn't believe how low TKM's share price is. Despite poor management, I personally think it is extremely undervalued! With the money they won't be coughing up for the interconnect fees they were paying, they'll have a ton of it to invest into a mobile strategy.

Yip - they realize with voda/mtn you can buy your 3g stick and be "online" within x hours where as with ADSL it is weeks/months!

I honestly don't understand Telkom.

They have a massive network which they could upgrade for triple play (Video, Voice and Data) add a mobile bonus to that and very few others can compete. Or build packages that include data and voice calls that make them more appealing.

Offer bigger caps and free data paid content video on demand and see how their market will grow.

I suppose they are doomed in the end?

Same with telkom 3G - immediate connection...

telkom should not be allowed to do mobile IMO. i mean own the local loop and can't manage it so they go mobile. screw the rest of us who want fixed lines just because of Telkoms greed

If telkom ups its network rollout to cover the entire country asap, they would easily take market share from MTN and VC

We need a 4th operator with muscle, negotiating power and telkom is our best bet, existing network so its just a question of setting up base stations/last mile solution so the time to effect will be a heck of a lot faster than an entirely new entrant.

There is some irony though but then i doubt anyone expects them to drastically undercut, just enough to look attractive.

p.s. when are they going to start their voice and converged services + billing? as that will be a HUGE advantage.

I think they should just take the LL away from telkom forcefully as it seems they have set their mind on something else

I think I would make the move to Telkom with mobile. I have had great service from them and even recently transferred to a new exchange area and LINE and ADSL installed and working on the day I requested....for free nogal! (Closer package and self install)

I also think Telkom share price is severely undervalued, one just has to think of all the infrastructure in place Cables, Fibre, Exchanges in every suburb, satellite links and the NNOC to name but a few. I think the problem has been and always will be public perception and a requirement of a change of attitude within the company.

I for one think that getting one account for Fixed, Mobile, ISP and ADSL would be pretty good especially if it allows seamless movement between Fixed and mobile internet at similar rates.

I reckon it should be a positive move, even if it just serves to jack up the other players a bit.

More competition is always healthy for us.

My girlfriend who's in the UK pays R 150 per month for 5gb @ 7.2mbps HSDPA with a laptop included.

I didnt even bother to check our prices seeing that 2gb goes for R 385.

My thoughts exactly. If they can't run a business if they got all the infrastructure and exclusive access to it, how in the world are they going to make a success of the mobile part with already 3 major players in the game?

All it means to me is that they starting to plan for LLU when they know their fixedline part is going to fail.

Show us some comparison table
