10 Gbps SANReN national backbone live

Well done Meraka Institute, TENET and Telkom for completing the network ahead of schedule. I am quite certain that the students will enjoy the additional bandwidth - ‘educating’ themselves on the benefits of P2P services and the like ;)

Whooohoooooo - I can't wait for our campus to get that access to the Seacom international link !!! Nice Nice !!!

Hi All,

Just thought I'd add a little something about the testing we've been doing on the backbone now that its live.

The speeds are nothing short of incredible, in a test the other night we were running at 6gigabit/second (around 480MBytes/second) in a pretty stable throughput test from Johannesburg to London.

We've also been testing in the process of mirroring the sourceforge repositories, and to bring down a couple of hundred gigs in a day to mirror.ac.za through that backbone doesnt even come CLOSE to saturation.

I really think that this is going to be of huge benefit to our institutions and to the experience of many students and researches alike out there, its been a long time coming. I also hope that having a network like this out there in the country will help to provide some sort of catalyst to the commercial market, maybe wake them up a bit and demonstrate the possibilities.

We'll have to see going forward!

who gives a ***** about the students!? We are the ones that truly need it :D

Great stuff, guys! Well done to everyone for completing ahead of schedule.

Wonderful!!
That means as these people get used to REAL BB-speeds, they are likely going to assist in applying pressure to our Service Providers to improve speeds into areas outside the educational institution environment (i.e. when they try to work from home as we do!).

Wait? Student's get better bandwidth now!?

Damn skippy. They need it. When I was at UCT, the speeds were shocking during the day. This will make a huge difference. No more hours of waiting for an email to download, or a web page to load.

This is good news indeed.

Maybe the University of PRETORIA will now stop ripping off its students with R1/MB internet where only port HTTP is useable.

Sanren

Imagine the let down they will get when they finish varsity !

That's really cool. Plans to mirror any other sites?

I'm one of those eternal students, can you organise a FO link to my house by any chance? ;)

We're always open to suggestions about other opensource content to add to the mirrors. If you guys have ideas you can email myself ([email protected]) or Patrick Holahan ([email protected]) specifying the mirror, and an rsynchable URL to it.

Please though, no rubbish content, it has to be genuine opensource content that actually has a purpose and will be used properly. We evaluate requests for new mirrors on a case by case basis and base it on if its worth mirroring, the demand for the content, space available, and various other criteria, to make sure that its actually worthwhile bringing down and will have a benefit to our institutions. Obviously because mirror.ac.za is on the academic backbone, unless there is a benefit to the universities and those behind those campuses, we probably won't host it!

Thanks

Andrew
