Hi,

I'm sure this has been asked a million times on this site before, but I can't use the search feature, because it only takes words larger than 3 characters long and "do" is only two :)

Anyway, Telkom Do Broadband looks by far to be one of the cheapest options available. But I've heard somewhere that I will not be able to use another ISP with the Do Broadband package?

Is this true? If I, for example, have a 30GB local only OpenWeb account, will I be able to use it when having Do Broadband?
 
Do is just a combo package, phone line rental + ADSL line rental + data package. Your ADSL connection is stock standard, you can DO what you want to with it ;) On Do 3 the 5 GB data cost is R239 pm, R47.80 per GB and this includes 30 GB local. Afrihost charges R145 for 5 GB, no local after cap. So, if you want to save R94 p/m and you don't need the local bw, then don't DO it :p

Do Broadband doesn't include phone line rental.
 
Thanks for the info. Local cap is pretty important for me. So I'll have a look at DO and Non-DO :)

Last i checked you can use any ISP and have multiple ISPs at the same time, as long as you are paying that Line Rental. The DO Packages just give you bandwidth on top of the line rental directly from Telkom. On your router you have to set a username and password, and i guess all you need to do is change that to whatever ISP you want to use at that given moment....?

I think the confusion comes in because Telkom IS selling some "all-in-one" packages which includes everything [DO + Line Rental] , and yet selling them separately. I am still confused with how they sell it, because they put the SPEED limit on the BANDWIDTH package and not the LINE RENTAL. So you get the impression you must buy a 5GB package to get 4Mbit/s, even though all you want is 4Mbit/s and the bandwidth from someone else.

Check out the "DO Broadband Closer" vs. "Do Broadband" . The Closer packages INCLUDES Line Rental

Example:

DO1 : R199 (1GB 384kbs)*
DO2 : R258 (3GB 384kbs)
DO3 : R554 (5GB 4Mbits)

(*Notice the speed limits on these, even though Line Rental is not included...)

DO1Closer: R531 (1GB 384kbs)
DO2Closer: R591 (3GB 384kbs)
DO3Closer: R887 (5GB 4Mbits)


So i think what happens is, Telkom makes you think you are getting bandwidth "free" with your Line Rental, instead you are actually paying for the bandwidth.

Yip. I'm on Do Closer 3 (the 4mbps, 5GB et al package). When we get capped I simply change the login settings on the router to a prepaid Axxess account. No issues with that.

You don't have to get the Do or Closer packages from Telkom to rent an ADSL line. Here are just the line rental & installation prices: http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/adsl.html * Note these prices EXCLUDE normal Telephone line rental.
Telephone line rental for normal residents are R131pm. See http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/monthly_rental.html

Fast DSL (384kbps) R152pm excl., R283pm incl. Telephone Line Rental
Faster DSL (512kbps) R326pm excl., R457pm incl. Telephone Line Rental
Fastest DSL (4Mbps) R413pm excl., R544pm incl. Telephone Line Rental

I hope you are using some form of traffic splitting once your 5GB international cap is depleted, since you get another 30GB or so local only bandwidth from Telkom.​

The following doesn't have anything to do with Telkom Do Broadband packages, but its quite interesting to know:

beats Cybersmart R511 deal anytime, because you still have to pay R131 to telkom........

besides, had a run in with cybersmart a while back.....too many hoops and **** too go through......

Ettiene, just make sure you don't enter into a contract with telkom. The way the prices are dropping now you do not want to be stuck with one ISP. So, don't take the free modem :)
 
i just upgraded to a 4 meg line, and there is nothing like waiting 16 minutes for a 470 Mb file. Instead of 5 hours on a 384 line.
so push for a 4 meg
