Local hosting from Web Africa at R 11 per GB

Great move, now lets hope web africa can join the party when it comes to adsl pricing.
 
This is certainly very aggressive pricing - let's hope many SA websites hosted internationally will move back to SA.
 
I'm enjoying hosting in Germany, but with reseller packages and dedicated servers (similar to Hetzner), I'll most likely be moving all my (and my clients') sites back home soon! :)

WebAfrica's Windows versus Linux pricing looks a bit confusing!

...and sad about the long wait for new ADSL packages....

International latency is never going to be fantastic, so the more content we can access within the country the better.

I am an Afrihost hosting users.
Might have to migrate if they don't get inline.:(
 
R11? Can anyone extrapolate what their ADSL pricing will be based on that?

You are correct with the Windows and Linux hosting, there are multiple variables that make Linux hosting slightly more expensive for us so the pricing comes in a little higher.

Care to elaborate? All other hosting companies' prices I've seen have Linux coming in cheaper than Windows. Why are these 'multiple variables' only applicable to Webafrica?
 
Hmm... Maybe Web Africa should pitch for Microsoft on why they should host Xbox LIVE for them. I see alot of money there for WA.

Our engineers would have to elaborate further, but it has to with higher control panel costs as well support being more expensive due to the lack of experienced Linux technicians in SA. Most are only familiar with Windows.

We are one of the only ISP's that offer both Windows and Linux hosting, this convenience also has an effect on us.

I would also like to know...

Still keeping my clients internationally.
Converted to Rands my hosting works out R1.74 P/M per domain on average since I buy in bulk with 750Mb disk space and 10Gig of traffic per Domain.

Sure I cant provide my clients with a control panel at those prices but at R60p/m I can give it to them with 20 Domains / 15gig Disk space and 200gig Bandwith.

So unless SA comes in at those prices I'm staying where I am :-)
And no the service is actually very good and hosted in a true tier 1 datacentre in the UK. The Control panel packages can Also choose between USA and Sweden if they want with the same price.

We still have a long way to go in sweet old SA to be competitive with the rest of the world


But thumbs up for Webafrica for starting the revolution....

These prices do not work for me. My international hosting costs me $6.00 per month with unlimited disk space (the website is currently around 1.5 Gb in size) and 1 terabyte of bandwidth. Cpanel and 100 sql databases. Oh yes I can host around 100 domains on this package as well.

Dont see myself switching to local hosting soon
 
Won't be switching over from Hetzner local hosting yet, even though the bandwidth increase is a tremendous breakthrough, disk space is still about 25% of what Hetzner offers. For instance, Hetzner's Basic package @ R99 pm offers 1GB, while WA Standard Linux package only offers 250 MB? Come on guys, certainly bandwidth usage is tied to the amount of data you got stored on your server!
 
A big congrats to Webafrica for doing what no other web hosting company has done before: making local hosting affordable. This will truely change the local internet landscape, for both webmasters and users, and hopefully continue to push prices down.

Local companies are doing their clients a disservice by hosting their sites internationally - so now no one will have an excuse. Those left hosting international obviously don't understand that a user's experience is crucial to the success of a website, with speed being a major factor.

I just hope Webafrica rethink their maintanence strategies though, because I've had countless hours of downtime thanks to changes being implemented without proper testing. Of course, a lot of that downtime can also be attributed to connectivity issues, which hopefully will be fixed with a more stable network.
 
Think we should start a "Host it Local" campaign... I see the iBurst gaming service iGame is actually hosted internationall? I mean they can host a bunch of servers for local gaming but not host a little website locally?
