A bit of background to my situation, I have been using Vodacom 3G for the last 22 months as a solution to work from home via VPN but the problem I have always had is that the signal drops all the time and for the last three months has been particularly bad. I have always received rubbish signal strength up until about 3 months ago and now it is not even worth using. The signal according to the Mobile Connect software is either Poor or Very Poor and in the last three months, much the same except that it constantly drops and searches for a network. Due to the need to have to work from home at all hours and dial in, not being able to connect or constant drops is not an option as I would then need to go into work to solve the problems.

I have logged several (4) calls with Vodacom and they admit it is their network at fault but to date (04/12/2009), they have not gotten back to me and the problem has not been solved. Vodacom were kind enough to offer me 1GB worth of data to compensate for all the lost data I have had over the months but this is really only lip service considering the amounts I have paid over the contract duration. Not to mention the fact that 1GB is useless if you cannot use it due to the connection problems which expired at the end of November 2009 (Useless).

So out of sheer frustration to the above problem, I have recently bit the bullet and concede defeat in not giving into Telkom's pricing and ordered a new telephone line and the 4MB ADSL line. I did not order the Do Broadband option yet as there has been a flurry of news about data price reductions.

So, to the point of this post, what is the best ISP option, ideally 1GB is fine for me and I am not too concerned about the split between local and international, as I may as well just have an international account as there is not very much hosted locally. In an ideal world, I would love an unlimited bandwidth option but I don’t believe I would ever utilize it to its full potential, so if anyone know anything about how much bandwidth above the 1GB needed for work matters I would need for gaming and other such applications. I would like to be able to play online games again but I am not a huge gamer so maybe put down a couple hours each weekend in usage to be my needs. What I am looking for is the best possible ISP to use on a month to month or short contract if I must at the cheapest price.

If anyone knows why Atlasville has such terrible 3G signal and what the relevant networks are planning, if any to do about it. This thread probably falls into a couple of categories but have listed it here due to the ADSL questions.

Thanks in advance for the help.

What I suggest is stay away from contracts get your self a shaped or unshaped prepaid account with Webafrica or another service provider nice thing about prepaid it never expires and you only need to buy more when you finished what you have no more loosing 2 gigs out of your 4 gig cap because you had a slow month. Pre Paid is the way to go. There are loads of ISP's now so if you search the this forum you will get all the info you need on them

I was in exactly the same boat as you, just with MTN. But the same problems with 3G. Got myself a ADSL line from telkom, and initially went with some Prepaid data from Afrihost (R39/gb). Then went onto a 10gb month-to-month contract for R290, and now I am on a uncapped account with Axxess.

Bottom line is that ADSL is insanely cheap compared to the 3G offerings, and have got me completely hooked. Please be aware that ADSL is completely addictive after you struggled with 3G for 2 years......

Fixed Line

wtf are you on about?

750,000 MTN subscribers :D
and
the fact that Telkom appear to be abandoning the fixed line / last mile segment.
or
to put it in a different way -- have decided to concentrate on "wireless"

Personally

I think some idiot in Telkom HQ ( Gov ) read Knott-Craigs book -- had a look at how "easily" and quickly VC made money hand over fist.

Looked at the books and got bedazzled by the income generated from their relationship

Then decided that they would do a VC -- "second-edition"

Believing that wireless was the way forward.

Completely neglecting the wired fixed line part of the business -- to their detriment.

THAT is what the post above confirms.

Telkom is NOT a wireless operator -- they are a FIXED line MONOPOLY

While your post has some merit, I don't think that they are 'abandoning' the last mile. ADSL is one of their primary growth areas. Evidence is the continued roll out and upgrading of DSLAMs and UMCs (required to shorten the last mile distances to potential customers).

I do agree that they might be neglecting some of their copper network at the moment as they are too focussed on SWC/FIFA requirements and might have shifted temporarily resources.

IMO they are wanting to accelerating their mobile strategy in order to extract some short term benefits from the influx of supporters for the SWC. These fans are all going to go mobile...

Where you are spot on is:

Brnading Marketing Awareness

While your post has some merit,

Ahhhh Hhhhmmm OK -- if you say so :D

AAhhh -- so that is why they are FIRING 4,000 TELKOM workers :mad:

onto MTN and Vodacom ( Vodafone) OLD WELL established brands and known to overseas visitors
who -- if they ever read MyBB ONLY ever read "I HATE TELKOM"

WHAT sort of Brand loyalty does that invoke

WILL they even know that there is another MOBILE operator called TELKOM

HOW MUCH is Telkom going to be spending on BRAND AWARENESS

the salaries of 4,000 wekkers ..........:confused::confused::confused:

Where you are spot on is:

EVERYWHERE

Firing??? They are reviewing 4000 temporary workers' contracts. Are you one of them? :D There are still around 25000 permanent workers.

BTW I was actually agreeing with plenty of your post concerning the OP...;)

NO -- but I feel for them

You see me here -- I post all over the place -- like a shotgun :D

But I try and read as much as I can -- and hopefully learn something.

What I am seeing -- since the new upstart ISP's started coming on line is MANY people wanting to get ADSL ( TELKOM Line ) wanting to upgrade to 4MB etc etc.

I do not have the figures or stats ( DOES Telkom ) of what is going on in the market. ( They should do -- they should be giving the new ISP's FREE SAIX bandwidth)

What I do know is that posters ( and ISP's ) here are fighting each other -- probably kill each other -- for cheap fast affordable bandwidth / data.:erm::D

Which 3G ( of any iteration ) is NEVER GOING TO GIVE YOU

I just see an incredible opportunity being flushed down the drain.

WHY is Telkom NOT using those 4,000 for fixing up and rolling out new cable / fibre on the local / national links ??????????

Maybe because the majority are not technical staff but admin and support types?

I agree with your ADSL opinions. Telkom should nail the market and abuse their dominance while Neotel struggle with CDMA. Drop prices and sign up as many ADSL subscribers as possible as quickly as possible. Focus on the network and wholesale to the smaller ISPs - let them fight for the bandwidth margins!

Okay, thanks for everyones comments, I have not been able to post until now because of my 3G problems. I have had a confirmation from Telkom that they will be installing the telephone and ADSL 4MB line tomorrow, I have sorted the ISP out and chosen the Afrihost 2GB solution and all looks set for tomorrow. I still need to find my ADSL Modem/Route somewhere in storage so hopefully it is still around.

@Jan99

Yeah, I think ADSL can be addictive though I have had it for years until my return to prehistoric South Africa with the no true broadband and made up marketing statements (Broadband 384 etc). When I was in the U.K, broadband started out life as defined as 512/128 as a minimum and progressively got faster. Before I left, I had a UKonline 8MB account with a standard BT line for GBP40.50 Unlimited (Well, to be honest, 500GB limit per month) and came with an ADSL2 Netgear Modem and Wireless Router and could have gotten a leased lines for GBP60 pm...This line was upgrade a few months into the (1 year) contract to 24MB. So, unfortunately South Africa has a long way to come. I came back nearly 4 years ago.
