The country's matric pass rate has been given a boost as some provinces allegedly encouraged teachers to ensure a 100% pass rate in life orientation, the only non-exam subject.

Despite several provincial education departments vehemently denying that they issued such a directive this week, at least one senior government official and teachers in several provinces confirmed having been "unofficially" instructed to do this.

The Sunday Times has established that Mpumalanga, Free State and North West had recorded no failures in the subject, based on provisional results, while Gauteng and Northern Cape are also expected to have a pass rate of more than 98% in the subject, according to senior department officials.

Academics and a teachers' union have expressed fears that the results could impact on this year's overall pass rate.

A compulsory subject at government schools, life orientation covers skills, knowledge, values and attitudes about oneself, the environment, responsible citizenship, a healthy and productive life, social engagement, recreation and physical activity and career choices.

It is the only subject pupils did not need to stress over for the exams as it is marked by individual schools based on work done over the whole year.

The country's 585474 matrics are allowed to fail one subject provided they pass three subjects with a minimum of 30% and three others with at least 40%.

If the life orientation pass is guaranteed, a pupil can fail any one of their other subjects - including maths but with the exception of their home language - and still pass.

Ezra Ramasehla, president of the National Professional Teachers' Organisation of SA, said: "How genuine could these results be if we had a 100% pass rate (in some provinces)?

"I would expect that if provinces have a 100% pass, it is likely to have a huge impact on the overall matric pass rate."

A pass in life orientation is generally not a prerequisite for university admission, although some universities insist that pupils achieve at least 50%.

Pupils need between 50% and 59% in life orientation to study at the University of Pretoria, while those wanting to study commerce at the University of Cape Town need at least 60%.

Professor Sarah Gravett, dean of education at the University of Johannesburg, said the quality of teaching in the subject would have to be questioned if some provinces had in fact achieved a 100% pass rate.

Thandi Sono, headmistress of Sophungane Combined School in Mpumalanga, said she had heard of teachers being told not to fail pupils.

"But that hasn't bothered us as we pass pupils on merit," she said.

The co-ordinators for life orientation in North West and Free State confirmed that their provinces had recorded 100% pass rates in the subject.

provided they pass three subjects with a minimum of 30% and three others with at least 40%

That gives them a Matric pass ? A 35% average ?

You have got to be kidding me !

at 41 can i go back to school now?

why even have schools why not just hand out matric certificates to everyone and let them fight it out for jobs?

Regarding LO I wouldn't be surprised. One of my friends apparently didn't hand in a project, so that had to make up a mark so that they could pass him in LO. Personally I believe that LO is a pathetic subject and a total waste of time. The only thing I actually learnt was how to create a CV. Oh and what Aids stands for. I also learnt that some people believe that the Americans are responsible for 9/11 (Which wouldn't suprise me tbh).
Just my 2c

How long would it have taken you to learn all that from Google? ;)

To put it in pre-internet terms... How thick would the information leaflet have to be? Three pages? :p

Oh, they do get in. Don't be fooled. There's just a massive cull towards the end of the year once they realize that by failing all courses you are excluded and denied readmission.

The govemunt will eventually intervene and change this as well.

good luck getting into a University if you only have a 35% pass mark in Matric.
No luck needed, the Universities just allow them to write an entry exam.

If you're incapable of competing and you have the power, you just lower the standards.

The word is government.

No in SA The word is Guvament! It was changed to suit our new matriculants and their 30% Pass rate for english!

Absoloutely pathetic we go from a world class education system to this joke?!

The problem with this is that it degrades the whole system, how do you now measure accomplishment?

Are the distinctions nowadays worth the paper it is printed on? Is there any trust or worth in a matric certificate?

The varsity here has a 6 months basic English course for some students that is a prerequisite for entering the varsity, only after passing the basic English can they apply for admittance. Basic English people, stuff you should have been able to do when you left standard 5!
Where will this end one day?

On a positive note, this could persuade our Julius M to return to school, and to perhaps add one extra brain cell to his DNA make-up ... at least the one he currently has wouldn't be lonely any more

Life Orientation sounds like a wishy-washy, impossible to assess to subject. Make completing it a requirement if they wish, but it should not be one of the subjects on your senior certificate.
