Broadband penetration: SA versus the world

The DoC might do well to enforce many other processes as well!

- LLU.
- SNO to actually provide cable services.
- Subsidise PC penetration.
- Pricing.
- Tell their masters to disinvest from all telco's.
- Sell Infraco and SITA to highest bidder.
- better distribution of wireless spectrum.
- improve USAL processes/business models.
- tell the Telkom Board (who they control) to employ a non-technical CEO.

South Africa currently has around 2-million broadband subscribers, equating to a broadband penetration rate of 4 broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants - well below the OECD average of 22.8.

To add to what Moggie said:

Hand out WiMax/LTE spectrum (including the spectrum from Sentech which is not used)

How about WUG vs Cellular broadband vs ADSL penetration? Add a poll to who has adsl + wug and 3G/HSDPA + wug :D

The only thing that is penetrated in the South African "broadband" comunity are the end users. :(

The cost of broadband vs income

What most forget is that our income as compared to that of Europe and the rest of the world is low. In spite of this, we are still fighting to get our broadband cost even close to that of the rest of the world. So we receive a double whammy, and I'm afraid that our penetration rate will not increase very much.

The broadband rates must still come down a lot more.

Tommorow we will publish an article focussing on Broadband Penetration Rates and GDP per Capita. We are doing poorly here as well...

Does this include broadband wireless from phones?

Lets say someone that uses a 3G enabled phone on a 3G enabled provider just for browsing facebook, mxit, etc. on their phone? I'm sure that would increase the amount dramatically?

A lot of very poor people (Those that would not be linked with broadband and pc combo) still have 3G enabled phones?

Just wondering for interest sake :/

What's the OECD definition of 'broadband?'

I'd guess it's around 2mbps? That would disqualify all the lower speed SA connections which I'm betting the DoC includes in their figures.

Not sure, if they know most of those things existing.
