It seems that Multichoice has gone a bit sneeky on us:mad:!

I have not yet checked it myself, but according to this thread on the DSTV forum it was done: http://forum.dstv.com/showthread.php?t=4956&page=4

What it means is that my DVD recorder are now for all practical purposes worthless. The composite output of the decoder now has Macrovision encription enabled, which means that you cannot make a back-up of movies etc. stored on the PVRs hard drive. I think this just suck bullocks!

Wow that sucks. Didn't even know people did that. Thought everyone just download tv shows and movies broadcasted?

Trust Multichoice to not put their efforts into developing a better and stable UI, but waste their time on this...

More and more people will start to rather download the stuff they want to see than to have to put up with this nonsense.

What are the chances they will implement Macrovision on the standard decoders? I will not be forced to buy a new PVR and basically take my dvd/hdd recorder to Cash Crusaders.

Yes Multichoice! Focus all your time and effort on closing the barn door after the horse has bolted!! we can download these movies before they even get onto DSTV.

So instead of offering me a product that ooses convenience, reliability and customisability (spelling?), They give ua a product that is made NOT do do things more than anything else! No functionality without a subscription, no advanced seach, no backing up, no adding external hdd's to expand your recording space.

I have to think harder all the time to justify the R626.72 I pay them every month....

It's a while since i subscribed to MC, but I seem to recollect that Macrovision has been running for some time. maybe a search of the DSTV archives will elicit something.

I am now really hoping that either (a) my hdpvr has not been upgraded or (b) I can still record!

The way I see it is that this technology is simply promoting piracy.

Well , yet another reason to get a Dreambox....

***EDIT
Continued improvements to content protection may be the cause of issues when recording to external 3rd party devices.

It seems that this copy protection will be done on all the DSTV decoders. Here is a quote from the Multichoice representative on the DSTV forum: "Just for info - it is a contractual requirement that we impliment copy control on all decoders moving forward."
Surely this will kill the market for DVD recorders? I wonder what the opinion is of manufacturers such as Sony, LG, Pioneer etc about this is?

Macrovision on DVD / S-Video signals just corrupt the signal in a way that messes up recorders, but not TV's.

You can get gadgets that correct the signal and remove the signal corruption. These are often used by people with digital projectors, as the signal corruption can cause the projectors to function improperly.

HDCP (on HDMI) works differently, and depends on negotiation between the devices.

That's just a load of bull from the Multichoice monkey. I'd be more interested in the opinion of the content providers re. this lie.

Looking for some test info guys..

Which recent movies (since activation of Macrovision) fails to record to external DVD writers.

Anyone know ther version of this Macrovision?

Well if you think that Macrovision is bad - Astra HD+ in Europe is trying this...
In addition to, a new Digital Rights Management system (DRM) will be introduced into the TV consumption, similar is has been tryed by the music industry. With the new technology a broadcaster may determine, if a consumer can record, do timeshift or do fast forward in advertising breaks in records. Aditional disadvanteges are considered by the case, that HD+ certified receivers can only decrypt a single encrypting system, so that users of foreign broadcasting stations would have to use additional hardware. Just as a side effect, there is a support for the formation of a monopol and not guaranted customer investment security, binding the receiving technology to one single supplier.

It appears that it applies to all content across all channels using the HD-PVR. Seems from this thread that they are using CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media):

http://forum.dstv.com/showthread.php?t=4956&page=11

Absolutely disgraceful...

And in that thread the NoChoice company Representative states:

Just to correct an earlier assumption – no change has been made to Macrovision in this software, the improvements were made to CGMS-A.

Absolutely disgraceful.

I'm still wondering why my folks pay for DSTV. Way better things to blow money on which actually have a value/utility instead of decreasing in quality and increasing in price every 6 months.

Does the pvr have component or scart out?

If so,get a component capture device (haupauge has one) or scart to composite convertor.Iirc macrovision only works on composite.

The scart output on the HD-PVR also has copy protection.

Oh, and btw ALL dstv decoders will be copy protected when the software is updated.

Then we need to disable firmware updates now! My 1110 is working 100%, no need for updates.

a few years ago I copied from a DVD to video without any problem.
My setup was DVD out to HI-FI in, HI-FI out to TV in, TV out to VCR in, recording was perfect, without that grey/black undecoded look on it.

I guess all the devices screwed around with the decoding on the DVD.
Never tried it again after that...

It actually works if your tv has tv out.It sometimes help to have a third device in the chain, like a camcorder.I'm not too clued up with macrovision but didn't the recording device has to accept it? So if you have a no name tv card or something the macrovision don't work.
