Web celebrities

Given the millions of bloggers, it’s no mean feat for them to get noticed, let alone famous. But here are some who’ve catapulted to web celeb status.

I wonder how famous "Belle de Jour" would be if she used her real name from the start...

I only know of this PerezHilton twit... the rest I've never heard of...

Their blogs are clearly full of twaddle if they're "famous"

I often think we (actually more specifically Americans) have reached the point where they really stretch the definition of celebrity.

Think Kardashians, Paris Hilton, playboy mansion chicks, in fact anyone on these "reality" shows now. All it takes is a little bit of exposure and you are all of a sudden a celebrity. They love to build people up and then they usually try to bring them down.... Give me South Africas way of dealing with famous people any day of the week!

Too true. I've just been on the one 'stuffwhitepeoplelike.com' and it's remarkably silly. For instance the latest post is that most white males wear Ray-Ban sunglasses. Um...who gives a hoot?

@Lancelot: There are plenty of examples where the SA media has praised someone and then broken them down. Think of Hansie Cronje, Joost...and even to some extent Mbeki - in the early part of his presidency, some members of the press were reluctant to criticise him. Ironically the press became very anti-Zuma in the run-up to Polokwane, but that's because Mbeki used state machinery to leak certain stuff to the media about Zuma.

What? No Philip DeFranco? WTF?

Had the journo done his/her research, he/she would noticed that Time magazine voted Perezhilton as their fourth most overrated blog for 2009.
FYI: It's called Google and you can, like totally, type in a word, phrase, sentence or question, and it returns a whole bunch of results. Lazy people tend to only click on the first result, but anyone who actually WANTS to learn something looks down the rest of the list of results. Some people even go a step further on to the other pages of results - those numbers at the bottom of the page aren't just there to remind you how to count!

@ToxicBunny: ALL personal blogs are full of twaddle, so that CAN'T be the reason that they're famous ;-)

@LancelotSA: The way that SA media deals with celebrities is totally shocking actually! Firsty, 99% of our "famous" people are either sports stars or politicians, which generally fall into the "infamous" category. Secondly, i've been working in the media for nearly 15 years, and it's an industry filled with a bunch of conservative, narrow-minded, a$$-creeping muppets, who care more about ingratiating themselves with these "famous" people than publishing a truthful or honest opinion. They constantly pass this mutton off as lamb to increase sales and win public opinion, yet cry like babies and desperately try to sweep their dirty little secret under the carpet when their 'investment' turns out to be a kiddie-fiddling, drug peddler, who likes kicking small dogs and taking long walks on the beach. When all else fails, they hang them out to dry and let a different publication or show do the dirty work, thus keeping their hands clean and the door open if said "famous" person manages to dodge the bullet – which, from experience, is a lot more common nowadays. Our fantastic media has hidden more truths and lies in cupboards and under carpets than we can imagine and put a spin on everything we consume as their target market. Their only talents seem to be polishing turds and covering their large a$$es. A shiny example of journalistic integrity don't ya think?

The major point you have missed is that they were not created by the media but rather their pursuits in their relevant fields.

And again I will stress that I far prefer the South African manner! Your post only served to confirm this!

And saying that these individuals are investments for the media in this country is laughable when in America or Britain a stalker will get paid a fortune by the media for any picture catching a "celeb" in a compromising position! They only get paid that because the media then earns a fortune for publishing said pictures!

Actually, given the propensity for the Americans to make someone famous simply because they were seen with someone else "famous" or they wrote something about someone else "famous" then yes... it can be the reason.

And no, not all personal blogs are full of twaddle, I frequent quite a few that are intellectually stimulating and help me in my day to day job.

Yeah, you're probably right. Generalisation can be such a cruel mistress. I guess sometime you really do have to sift through the hay to find those precious needles.

There goes my New Year's resolution to be less cynical in 2010. Not even two days! Drat ;)

Reminds me a few weeks ago, less than maybe 8?, Top billing (i know, i know.. but i swear i was sitting at pc while little sister was watching on tv in the distance) ran something a local blogger who was doing the whole web 2.0 blog with local celebs. They were going on about how famous he, as his guests, were etc but the whole time i was like WTF i've never even heard of this oke. :p

Which begs the question.. how much exposure, in terms of site hits a month on a blog would be considered to be blog celeb status? Some say when you start making money from it.. but i dunno.

What? Are you kidding?

That pudgy smoker-voiced pretentious bimbo ruins the entire show

What's her name? I forget. The one with the saggy cleavage.

Not kidding at all. And she is only one of many. In fact not sure if she is still even there any more. But we are going off topic now.

Can the moon be classified as "a [single] rock" to live under?

I'm actually proud of the fact that I have not heard of "Perez Hilton" before now [same goes for the rest mentioned in the article].

It sounds like you must be quite familiar with that TV programme, I'm surprised it is still on TV, but now I'm curious to know who the saggy bimbo might be.

When I still listened to 5fm [that was many years back], 'Brown Sugar' used to boast that she was a presenter on SnotSpilling.

saggy cleavage .. hrm, now i got to figure out who that is. You mean the one with the travel show before cigare
