Connection stability issues, is it Telkom or me?

Periodically (actually seems like it's happening almost every 30 mins to an hour) my connection dies and I cannot transfer any data.

Quickly jumping into my router's setup page I can see that there is no assigned ip so the connection has dropped. I'm not sure whether to blame my line or the exchange or something else.

Since earlier today I have been running router stats and I've only lost sync completely once, I still lose connectivity while the line is synced it seems. The noise margin seems pretty stable at around 21 (low of 20 high of 22).

Some stats from my router: (only the -4 seems quite different than usual to me)

noise margin upstream: 24 db
output power downstream: -4 db
attenuation upstream: 24 db

noise margin downstream: 21 db
output power upstream: 0 db
attenuation downstream: 39 db

I have a 384k line if that matters, any other info needed to help me out? What should I ask Telkom to do? Think I will phone them asap and ask if there is a known problem at the exchange for a start.

There has been some lightning around here recently so I guess that's maybe a cause for concern.

Another issue is that I usually use a lot of pppoe connections for multiple accounts and there are problems with them either taking ages to connect or not connecting at all, intermittently as other times it takes seconds.

The last time I had a problem similar to yours, I phoned Telkom and asked them to reset my "ADSL line". Be all sweet and syrupy with them, I think it helps. :D

Anyway, the problem went away after they had done that.

Ja that's what they did (I think) last time I had sync issues, when I speak to them I will ask for that thanks for the reminder, not so sure it will help as I'm not actually losing sync this time round, at least I have only once, can't hurt to try though I guess.

Some updated line stats:

noise margin upstream: 14 db
output power downstream: 2 db
attenuation upstream: 24 db

noise margin downstream: 29 db
output power upstream: -1 db
attenuation downstream: 39 db

Telkom said nothing wrong with the exchange, it might be my router (sure not though). Port was reset so I'll see how it goes. Any other insights would be appreciated though.

It hasn't worked, does anyone know if Telkom can actually change my port over hte phone? Will try.

Where are you?

I've been having this problem since yesterday? never had it before. Its still doing it this morning, which ISP?

Thanks.

same issues here im in Sandton JHB (kelvin exchage if i remember corectly)
all the logs show the conection dropping every 20-30 min since yesterday morning

I've had this issue for months... had telkom over a few times but turns out the line quality in my area is degrading and I'm one of the few who use Adsl here so they're not interested in maintaining the line.

Same problem

Hi

I've been experiencing this problem since yesterday morning also.

I'm also connected to the Kelvin exchange in Sandton,

I've already contacted Telkom and they've recreated my port at the exchange but it's still doing it.

Guys you won't believe it, I'm also in Sandton and, I'm 99% sure the person I spoke to on the phone yesterday said I'm on the Kelvin exchange, so that makes two of us at least, me and Folly.

@Rurapente are you also on the Kelvin one, and when did your issue start? I'm using multiple accounts, Telkom, Afrihost and Axxess, all experience the same issue.

So then as it does seem like the exchange is at fault, what do we do? I did raise that as a possibility with the people I spoke to but they told me there's no maintenance going on or planned for the exchange, and they can't see any problems with it from their side.

Does anyone know how we elevate this so that they can actually have a look at the thing and fix it? Do we all just keep phoning complaints? I was going to report a line fault and have a tech come out, maybe we'd all need to do that so that they can see our lines are ok and realise the problem lies elsewhere?

I've tested with another modem my side and I know it's not that which is at fault now. My line syncs and doesn't drop, only has once that I know of since yesterday, I think my line is ok. Can the exchange being faulty cause me to lose sync? (I would have thought so.)

I'm in Sandton and guess what....

Kelvin Exchange :)

So. that seems to be the problem. I'm gonna phone them now.

Okay, i've been told there's a network problem in Kelvin since yesterday and they're still working on it.

Also, i noticed its not actually DSL - while i was on the phone the line drops - the WHOLE line, DSL, voice- everything for 2secs and then its back.

Please other ppl phone too so this gets more focus.

Shweet well seeing as I phoned yesterday I'm not in such a hurry to phone again, especially as you've said they are working on it, but I will probably phone later to check up on them. ;)

I haven't been using voice so not noticed that side of things.

Rurapente said they are working on it in his post. To be sure, phone and ask them.

supposedly they are. i dont know what takes this long short of re-building the exchange???

I tried calling 10212 to report the voice problem so they look at that too. But, it appears Telkom only has 2 options on the screen "Its working" or "Its dead" - intermittent failures confused the agent on the phone so much I finally told her to have a nice day and hung up...

anyone know if this is resolved?

i resorted to pulling the neotel kit out the cupboard to get my downloads last night!

ok im going to pull my hair out and run screaming down the road!?!?

I phoned telkom for an update now, and they tell me they never had any problem at Kelvin Exchange in the last month. WTH?!?

So he logged a "new" fault and said they will send someone out to my house to investigate. *sigh*

You cant. i tried!

She said "the line is testing ok" After the 3rd time I was tempted to lean through and rip her tonsils out!

They are really clueless on the word intermittent. It just doesnt exist. Now they are sending someone out, and I can see where this is gonna go. They gonna see it working for 5sec, drive off and bill me for "unecessary call out".

I will hang the person if i catch him.

Don't think this is related to a specific exchange - I'm on the other side of Joburg with the same problem, and other friends on different exchanges have had similar problems over the weekend. Apparently the issue is with an international link.
