Havent been able to connect this morning, plus their website is also down.
anyone got any news?

I am connected...... (but on from last night) , but also cant get to their homepage.

dont suppose u have a number for their support. always went to the website to get it?
thanks.

Looks like saol.com points to ns1/2.astronet.co.za and that those DNS servers do not reply as authoritative to the domain saol.com at this moment.

Wonder how they managed that...

Doing a whois on the domain reveals:

Database last updated on 19-Jan-2010 00:41:57 EST

I guess someone changed the domain and could be changed to new DNS servers that is incorrect, who knows.

My SAOL 384K uncapped account also died about 15 minutes ago, and refused to reconnect. My router reported a "PAP Authentication failure". I tried to reconnect several times, but still no luck. I'm using my Afrihost account now, which is giving no problems.

I wonder what's up?

Just got a Call from some Tenants in the Office Block... SAOL Email is also borked.

Someone Failed HARD...

Hmmmmm.....maybe my connection died after I left home. Bummer.

Hi Guys

Please be patient. I know that you rely on the internet quiet substantially. I mean this is our bread and butter too. We understand how important this is for you.

We are down at the moment. Our Server Analysts are working on the problem, could be hardware failure. I will know more as soon as I get some feedback. This was not planned and it is totally unexpected, however rest assured that our main priority right now is getting you back online.

Thank you so much, for your patience and understanding.

Our office line is 0861007265

Thank you
Neethi

Its abit ironic that this happens to Screamers almost every day.
I was actually going to Saol today about an account, but I'll wait until their services are back up and running again.

Hi Neethi. Don't know if all SAOL's systems are down, but it would be nice if you could send a notification email to all subscribers telling us that things are broken, and another one when things are back up again.

It would also definitely save your call center tons of headaches. If people know you are down, most people will switch to another ISP temporarily (account or prepaid) until things are back to normal...

Also shows good customer service. We can understand when things break. But let us know about it. Use your backup database to send notification emails.. This should't be too hard. I could even implement it myself for you...

My SAOL account was down yesterday too. I called in an they reset my account. It was fine then. Now it seems broken again, since I cannot log into my home PC from work.

Hi "Toxicwazte"

Thank you for your suggestions and concern. Mail and SMS servers are down. So we cannot send any notifications.

We do not expect to be down for the entire day,

The quickest way to inform customers, is when they call in.

Thank you
Neethi

Thanks for the feedback Neethi.

I am glad it wasn't just me. Hey these things happen, good luck!!!

Then it seems the telephones work, so why not call all customers. I mean it cannot be expected from the customer to foot the bill. Another solution would be to have a mobile broadband backup for 1 SAOL employee. He\She could then send the mail via GMAIL.

Telling the customers that they can call in to find out what is happening is just not good enough.

Well, in any event - at least we have feedback. And its re-assuring that people are working on the problem. I hope its back up sometime today.

Surely they have their own backup systems for their own internet connectivity? How can an internet-based business survive without backup internet connectivity? They can't only be relying on their own systems?

Surely they have incorporated 3G, iBurst Wireless, and/or Neotel as a backup. Their local network will then have failover, and they can still send notification emails.

For them to send notification emails, all they need is internet connectivity, and a backup database (even a week old backup will do fine) from which they can pull email addresses. All this can be implemented as a nice little web-app, or even a windows app, in under a day, with testing.

In any case, sh|t happens. Hopefully they can sort it out soon.
