702 Call-In Tonight (Tues)

Hi all,

Tonight a few of us are going to call into 702 at around 10:30ish (time is variable). The topic? Telkom, the failures of the Minister of Communications, the excessive pricing in the telecoms sector, and the impact of this on South Africa's economy.

The more people that call-in, the greater our chance that someone will get through. Please can anyone out there who is interested call in as well.

The number is: 011 883 0702.

Post suggestions about your main gripes here. I won't be online til after 8:30pm tomorrow night, but I hope that some people will post what they think are the most damning facts here by then. Please participate - even if you only post one or two lines about what angers you the most. All of that is useful.

remember that 702 control who gets on air with what info, by having their 'call screener' quiz you about what you want to say - so if they want to manipulate the results, they simply weed out the negative calls before they get on air.

So if they decide there're too many negative calls, and you start hearing lots of positive calls getting through on-air, I recommend lying to the call screener and saying that you want to defend Telkom and say how much of a good job they're doing - so that you get on air, and then continue the anti-Telkom barrage of calls :)

Off the top of my head - some good angles of approach are to mention
1. Its OUR taxes that built Telkom
2. Their 6 billion rand announced profits
3. The clearcut anti-democratic monopoly which means they control telephones, prices and the internet pipe all by themselves.
4. The fact that Government and individuals in Gov, are profiting directly from these insanely high prices.
5. Mbeki's own statement in Feb saying their prices were too high - therefore isnt Telkom itself going against the wishes of the President?

If its argued that this is a 'free market' system - then again, one has to point out that it ISNT - if only ONE company, built by OUR taxes, is the only one allowed to operate here.
That isnt capitalism, or a free market example at all - its like a fat bully being put in charge of the school sweet shop. Their profits arent from 'free market' operation or 'capitalism' at all.

Hope these above idea's help spank, train and focus whichever drones at 702 are put in charge of fielding calls tonight :)
(Nothing like presenting unqualified people on radio, with arguments that can't be dismissed :)
 
I am not sure that 702 does screen calls, well let's say not in my experience. I think the 'screening' questions make sure the call relates to the topic and not about some competition or whatever, or if there is a studio guest, a prompt for the host to bring the point in at an appropriate time.

I know that there is a commercial incentive to keep listenership interests up and a balanced view might be needed rather than pure Telkom bashing, but hopefully journalistic integrity will prevail too.

There is also a new guy that has taken over from Keno - maybe he has a new producer. And I think at this time of the night we are really on Cape Talk.

Telkom do lie - I have my own story on that. But let's also say that now that I have ADSL my telephone faults are fixed a whole lot sooner than they used to be. Telkom know how much I won't be paying them if my service is out. They're not stupid - just greedy.
 
They do screen Albereth. They have a producer in one booth checking calls for their topics. Sometimes they don't care, which might explain your experience, but generally they do screen.
 
i think latenate (after midnight) theres not always a call screener

Sorry if I disappointed, I did my best. I don't like public speaking or being on radio. It's hard to focus on a single aspect and push the point, as the DJ kept starting new topics without letting me really get into the issues at hand.

All I heard was some lady going on about being charged for calling engaged lines, but I don't think that was you Debs :p
