I jus thought it would be a good idea 4 every1 to post what ADSL router they use, by doing this we can see what the best is, if it has anything special.

By doing this people can find out which ADSL ROUTER they should go 4 when telkom decides to install the line. So go on, post what you have(Brand and Product), the PRO's & CONS and if your modem has special features(like never disconecting etc, heard from a few people that its true)

I have, courtesy of the MEGAPOWER Telkom:

Marconi Ethernet 4Port Router

Pros:It works ;)

Cons:1. One of the ports bust within a month of having it,so now its a 3Port Router
2. We often have to reset it coz it just freezes(don't know if this happens often with routers but it happens to us :p )

Netgear DG834GT

Pros:
looks sorta nice.
can take an external antenna.
easy to setup.

Cons:
Heats up quickly.
Frequent disconnects.
powers on and off by itself.
netgear provides crap support.
requires a lot of resetting.

Im probably one of the few who expects problems!

The original Marconi POTS off-white bugger...

Pros: It does what it was built to do.

Cons: Shoulda been black or metallic box. Would have looked better.

SMC 7904 WBRA

Very stable. Have not rebooted it yet. Have good wireless coverage. Have all the standard router features. I am very happy with it. I was even able to set it up as a wireless AP while I was waiting for my ADSL install.

Linksys WAG54G.

Pros: Looks very good in blue, Wireless, 4 port switch, ADSL 2+, ?Linksys?

Cons: It froze today (First time. Only used it for 4 days.) Cant connect external antenna, low transmittion power

EDIT: Just updated firmware. Will see what happens

Netgear DG834GT
Pro's: Looks very nice
Cons: None yet (tough wood)

I've had this baby for a few months now, and it works like a dream. Very easy to setup, and wireless works fine as well.
Cheers, Nick

Nickste, I am thinking of purchasing a "Netgear DG834GT" ---> same as yours....my telkom router aint so good...lol...will 'contact' you by 'email' for details....

Thks :)

I'm using an IPCop box w/ a billion 5102SM ADSL modem - Works like a charm.
I also have a linksys WRK54G wireless broadband router that I can use if the IPCop box fails.

Billion BIPAC 7100G 4-port Ethernet wireless 54G router.

Pros: Solid, reliable, never crashed on me, runs cool, wireless range is very good

Cons: Can't switch wireless off, router is not upgradeable to ADSL2+. I'm still bummed about being sold an obsoleted Billion router 2 weeks before its replacement (that supports ADSL2+) came out, without being informed of it!

Planet ADE-3100

Never managed to get it to connect as a router - the web interface is a complete and utter mess, so it sits and does its job as a bridged router via my IPCop box.

To be honest, I only tried to get it to connect for 30 minutes, before giving up in sheer disgust at what passes for an "interface"

But it's been as solid as erm - *a brick* although luckily I haven't bricked it :D

It was cheap when I got it in November - R450 if I recall - got a single ethernet connection. I liked it because of the price and that's it.

I have the Billion 7202G Wireless and it works great! Have been connected for a month now and it's running since then without even manual reconnecting to ADSL. Speeds transfer is also great. When doing the Telkom line speed, I get 274kbps on a 192DSL.
Wireless side also works like a charm. I sit behind 2 closed doors about 10 meters away and the signal strengh shows 90%.
This router also comes with a 2 year warranty against Netgears 1 year. On the Billion service side I can't comment as I haven't needed them yet, and hopefully I won't need them soon!
The BILLION is definitely a recommendation! www.billionsa.com
Prices are good too!

Linksys WAG54G

PROS - has everything you need. Wireless, dyndns built in, 4 port ethernet, easy to configure, port forwarding, firewall. Nice range of IP options, I have it plugged into a 24 port router via network cable, and the router is plugged into a 8 port hub in my other home office, and all pcs that plug in get assigned ips no problem.

CONS - 2 / 4 ports no longer work? May be lightning related. Wireless tends to disconnect and need a restart of the router. Maybe M$ problem though. I needed to fiddle with it to get the Telkom settings correct (VPI / VCI etc). No help in the manual for that.
And my pet hate - stupid two prong transformer!

Before that I had a DLink, not bad as well, but Linksys better.

I just ordered a Billion 5102 Router/modem combo. It seemingly comes with everything I need, 4 port switch, ADSL2+, VPN pass through for a nice mid-range price of R624. And from what I have read on Billion, they're quite sturdy *touchwood*.

All I need now is an ADSL connection. Put an order for a 384Home DSL connection about 2 weeks ago. Got told today that the installation date would be the 18th of October. Suffice it to say, I complained somewhat about the lengthy wait.

i have the new Telkom ADSL 4 port 5100 series router. it works great but i need to get another one. any ideas ppl?
