Telkom DIY (Successfull)

I finally have been able to setup the damn Telkom DIY without having a techie to come in and install it.

Basically you need the following:

1) DIY Kit (Pots filter, double jack)
2) LOTS OF PATIENCE (Although you do specify that you will be doing a DIY telkom will call you repetatively to schedule a techie to come out and install. I had to tell them 8 times that i am doing a DIY.. We all know telkom are stupid anyways so no use complaining there).

Once your line has been activated and your modem is able to sync with the DSLAM then youre good to go.

When you have to verify you adsl line you'll need an existing ISP account or altenatively if you dont have use the telkom guest account (SOMETHING WHICH TOOK ME VERY LONG TO GET BECAUSE I AM NOT USING A TELKOM MODEM. I literally had to "beat" out of a techie).

Telkom Guest Account:
Username: guest1@telkomadsl
Password: guest1

This allows you to only browse telkom verify adsl site.
www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

Follow onscreen prompts and hope to god that telkom dont throw any more spanners in the works.

u are 1 of da lucky 1's...

only certain areas at the moment can cater for self-install...

once u have modem synch - that actually means nothing!!!, but at least its a start..

like u said u go to da "verifyadsl" and do da necessary implementations and then it should work!! , but it does not - it fails and.............

then wen it fails u have to fone in and they "recreate" the connection for u...

u can probably surf da telkom page - but that sucks.........

ya and da story goes on.....
 
I feel your pain...

I was told endless times times that I can get a Self install when my ports are eventually availible, but now all the sudden they tell me that a techhie still has to come to my place.. NO idea why, since all he will be doing, is plug my filter into my phone and then into the line....

Im SO going to chase him away after he told me that my exchange is activated, and i WILL take them on if they dare add 404 to my bill for an installation...

Oh, and yes.. apparently, my area supports Self install.. after all, I was able to get my kit from telkom in my area by simply saying "I want my self install kit"
(still costed me money) ;p

Thats a load of bull in my opinion!!!

Its a stall tactic or the techies want to earn more money or something - but the only difference between techie install and DIY install is whether the modem and POTS filter are plugged in by you or by the techie... :mad:
 
Yeah copuld not believe that they leave that info (guest login and password to access the veryify site) off their instructions they give as part fo the self install package. Its like I can sync with the DSLAM and connect to my own ISP but no browsing. Most people would siomply call out a techie who would only need to modify the login details and then you get charged for the installation fee. I mean cmon seems like they really trying hard to make people pay the R404 by selectively leaving out crucial info
 
you can use your own isp login(for adsl) too.
 
krycor.....The problem is until you have configured your port with the verify adsl site you cant browse and you cant get to the verify adsl site with an IS logon .Not sure about SAIX logon.
 
OK, i have officially blew it.

I have 2 problems now with telkom with my installation...

1:
They are now all the sudden AGAIN yelling no ports at me.. this is the 2nd time now, and after 2 tecchies phoned me to ask if they can come to do my install(and i told both them i do self install, they then go to say they will contact me again in a moment, never contacts me again) and countless calls and whatnot that resulted in that there is ports and that self install is 100% for me.

2:
They are (after countless 100% go ahead for self install) telling me that because i have ISDN, i cant do a self install, they need to "change" something at my house.. i have NO idea what they need to change, they just need to rip out my copper at the exchange...
REALLY: all changes thats needed at my home, is i need to unplug the ISDN box at home, and plug in my ADSL Router(that i have, and already configured); then at the other port, plug in my microfilter(that i have) into the line, and then unplug the telephone from the ISDN Box and plug it into the microfilter

PLEASE tell me what they need to configure at my place, aswell as let me know if there is other folks out there that got self install on ISDN.. PLEASE
This is really getting on my nerves.. im battling with Telkom now since end July just for a self install and my line. I'm on over 30 calls to them now, i've even spoken to managers and whatnot, even got as far as CEO's office, he was in a meeting, so I spoke to another lady that sed she will phone me back :(

How can I miss the train 2x in a row for a port? PLEASE, if anyone can give me the info im requesting, ill be most gratefull :/
( any help will also be appreciated :P )
 
I was thinking the same... but that kinda defines the idea of an self install option, doesnt it?


I just got hold of a Telkom Tecchie face to face when he came to work on one of our lines at work, gave him my details ect and he said he will get back to me about this... sed himself its not suppose to be such a long thing, it doesnt take more than a hour to do any of the mentioned at the exchange..... lets see what happens with this... any other help will still be welcomed... (not that ur help didnt help RoDent ;) )
 
Once again - an example of how Telkom thinks that all customers are idiots and need a techie to hold their hand every step of the way.
We had our ADSL installed a few weeks before the self install became available and when the techie came round my dad ended up showing the techie how to install everything cause he didn't really have a clue - it might as well have been a self install!!! Cause we've had to redo all the stuff the techie did do himself anyway.
Both my dad and i are engineers so i'm talking rewiring and stuff - but it really doesn't take a rocket scientist to do the plug and play that most people require!!
 
I got my selfinstall adsl about a month ago and got a dlink adsl router but stupid telkom keep phoneing me and asking if I need help with there router
They dont seem to understand that i dont have a telkom router and never want one I am still waiting for my first bill with adsl I want to see if it has a adsl router on it

knowing them they will probably bill u for it and the installation ...

I was always under the impression that an ISDN line is a different line. What you should probably do is let them do the install but video tape it. If they only change the wall plug you can nail them to the wall.

I too want to know about ISDN conversions

(My first MyADSL post!)

My folks have gotten interested in ADSL and are seriously going ahead with converting the ISDN line we have over to ADSL. I'm not complaining :D ... but I can't help but think they've been misled by all the advertising, which many MyADSL users will attest is utter rubbish.

We've finally recently gotten a job number (1.5 months after applying). I wasn't sure about the self-install option at the time when we applied (beginning of Sept) so I didn't suggest they mention it when applying.

My understanding is that the ISDN box (with the unmistakable Telkom logo on it, called an ISDN Network Terminator) is still the property of Telkom, so at the very least they need to take it away. But other than that, it's still just a 2-wire copper cable from the street into the house.

I figure it'll be easier if a techie comes to do it, assuming they don't take forever of course! :mad: Not that I'm advocating waiting for one to come to just plug in a few plugs (I'm all for DIY) !
 
Mine were converted. They remove the ISDN unit or box, put a dual plug wall socket on the wall to the same copper wires, plug in the their laptop and run a test. Thats it. Before that they obviously do some mod at the exchange to re-route the port to a dslam? I think this is all software mods. They also test the line for quality (sometimes) I think

PS Welcome to MyADSL. ADSL is not so bad just Telkom that influence the pleasure of using it. We all hold thumbs by next Year it will be totally different and enjoyable.

That's what I thought, thanks.

So the only "complication" is them having to remove the ISDN box.

I'm gonna phone them tomorrow to bug them about an install date. Wish me luck! (with getting through to someone quickly) :p
