After sending Telkom the following email:

With all the rumors etc around, it might be a good thing if Telkom can inform their subscribers what is going to happen on the 1st of November 2005, since some ISPs have informed their subscribers.

Can you please let us know what's going on

Subject: RE: ADSL Capping

Morning Bladebla

Thanks for the e-mail and first off no need to panic just yet :)

From 1 November the ISP's move to usage based service, not necessarily the subscribers, if that makes sense to you. What happened is there is a group of ISP's out there that took the same 3 Gig service we sell and sold it as 30 Gig service. So we don't really have a problem with the vast majority of our DSL users, as they bought a 2, 3 or 4 Gig service and for most of them, stay within that limit.

We will be moving to a usage model as there is a large demand for more than the current Gig offering. I assure U that as soon as we have buttoned down our strategy, our subscribers will be the first to be informed. On the other hand if U are one of those subscribers that is running at over a 100 Gigs a month, U will be getting a mail from us sooner than later :)

Warm regards

 Can somebody please explain to me what have they been doing the whole time if they still haven't buttoned down their strategy?

By implication they seem to be saying that they will not be capping their 3 Gig subscribers come 1 Nov. They most likely have a lot of 3 Gig subscribers using less than their allowed cap and will therefore only start addressing those subscribers who use a lot of extra bandwidth

So we don't really have a problem with the vast majority of our DSL users, as they bought a 2, 3 or 4 Gig service and for most of them, stay within that limit.

What absolute crap.

Wait for Nov 1, check the Telkom website for price changes, then him em for discriminating against certain resellers of SAIX bandwidth. We would need proof from the ISPs too.

Seriously tho, come nov1st if telkom still offer unlimited local access after cap, their action might not be anticompetitive. Here's my theory as to why they might be keeping things the same (if in fact they will):

TelkomInternet's action can be emulated by other saix isp. Any ISP can look at their usage right now and say (ie hypothetically) most of their users are use under 3gb. They'll have lots of figures to back that up. Say everyone use an average of 66% of their cap, and say 33% of the users use more than their cap. This means for 2 out of 3 users there's an extra 1gb available for the 1 that is using more that month. You could then say that the company can give a soft cap of say 2 more gb (1gb from each of the other 2 users that didnt reach their cap will fill in for this). They can then deal with really high usage users on a case by case basis. So depending on average usage and how many ppl are going over with local, there's a lot of things ISP can play with, not just charging everyone per gig. If you ask me, any ISP going the per gig route and not give them carry over is playing unfair with their customers.

So concerning telkominternet's potential uncompetitive behaviour - Im not sure if I'll see it as such, it depends on how they deal with the socalled abusers. Other Saix-ISPs can also choose to do the same thing (if im right about what TelkomInternet will be doing)

I love the professionalism of the capitalised "U" instead of writing "you" - how utterly appaling.

That's your perogative, R4tt3xx and BlobNow. We have 3GB cap from TelkomInternet at home, shared among 4 people. I monitor each person's usage (in my family) on a daily basis using Microsoft ISA Server reporting. I have to tell you that while we (As a family) use about 5GB a month (i.e. we ALWAYS get capped and then go nuts on the local sites), I personally have never gone over about 450MB a month. I average 150MB a month. It's not like I TRY to stay within my limit. I don't want for anything, it just turns out that way. I only wish my brothers and my dad WOULD try! :P

I got ADSL for one reason and one reason only - to have an "always on" connection that was available when I needed it, without having to wait for a dial-up modem to connect.
Then I started hosting an IRC server behind it (Using DynDNS). If I do the math between Telkom's reporting of my ADSL usage and my ISA reporting of my ADSL usage, that server and website only receive about 100MB of incoming traffic a month. So if it were just me and not the rest of my family, I'd probably average around 300MB per month, and on a good/bad month would do about 700MB.

3GB is fine for me. JUST DON'T CAP LOCAL!!!!!!!

lol They know I do. They asked me to. My father rarely goes over 500MB himself, so it's just my two brothers we have to worry about. I sometimes sit back and wonder how it's possible for one (home-user, not talking about businesses here) person to go over 500MB since AFAIK, I've done it maybe once in just over a year, and my brothers have seldom failed to go over it in a month. WHAT THE HELL DO THEY DO???

Well yes but they fail to see the biggest problem, the cost. YES we want more than 3GB but not at the crazy prices they charge. IF I could get 30GB for R300-R400 per month it would be a good start. R570 for 10GB is the best I can get atm from my ISP who I am going to stay with.

Bottom line Telkom need to provide bigger caps at lower prices. Bottom end package should be R200-R250 for 15GB. Don't ask for uncapped, tehy will never go for it. Just bigger caps at good prices.

The reality is that Telkom sells a lot of ISP-accounts when people are applying for their ADSL lines. Many of these will be the low usage people, as they don't care (or don't know) any better.

One can therefore assume that TelkomSA has sufficient "low capacity users" to balance any of the few "high capacity users" still left with them.

On the other end: The guys who sold the 30GB accounts, attacted the hogh usage people and don't have any low usage clients to pad the needs of their requirements.

A nice example of Telkom abusing its monopoly on ADSL cabling.
