MWeb’s “killer ADSL offering” slated by ADSL consumers

It's difficult to stay neutral with regards to the various pricing ISP'c come up with.. but IMHO 145 beans for 1GB is expensive. There will be ISP's going in at half that considering even a wholesale gig from SAIX is 'only' around 60 beans. 145 is what we should be paying for 10GB not 1GB.. but there will probably be many people who will start off with a tiny 1GB account and then graduate to a 3GB account, which Telkom has said is more than enough for anyone.. kinda like Bill Gates said that 640k should be enough for anyone..
 
MWeb will come up with the usual tripe that its because of all the other little bits and pieces it bundles in with its deals like the online encyclopedia and stuff. All bandwidth intesnive as well and hardly ever used. People want internet access, nothing more.
Its just MWeb taking advantage of the uneducated public and it wont be forgotten in the future when the public starts to wake up with the help of sites like MAdsl and Hellkom.
 
Please be aware that MWEB maintains a full month's notice on cancellations of their services..

Nothing new or unexpected from them, just remember when you are cancelling their services that they will still charge you with another month's subs..

So it you want to rid yourself of their nonsence in December, you need to take action before the end of October!
 
I think MWEB have aimed this one at people who do not know alot about ADSL and I think this is dishonest and devious. !

This the very reason people have stayed away from the Internet etc becuase of high costs, and As an ISP we all try to make things cheaper while Telscum and Mweb work together to rip of the comsumer even more.
 
People take this for what it is.

An offer trying to entice people off dialup to ADSL. If they cross over and are unhappy with the service then GREAT! more forumites on MyADSL. However take nothing away from MWEB offering an ADSL package at the same price as there dialup to try and switch users to ADSL and off dialup.

That is something everyone should appreciate.

I have known this to be the case since the first MWEB dial up accounts. Those that used them expected something different in their ignorance...
 
MaD how about requesting a hellkom banner be placed on mweb's homepage? since hellkom is non-profit, and exposes the truth about SA's internet, it would be a true test of where mweb's intentions lay - whether its for the greater good of the economy or soley to cash in on an uninformed public.

Hmmmm.. I don't think MWEB is trying to sucker people into anything, they've never been shy to say that Telkom is inhibiting their business..

What was an idea though is to create a page on Hellkom which highlights the problems in the industry, and if a business (whether ISP or otherwise) agrees with that then we put a logo and link on said page..
 
Trust MWEB, what trully sucks is the fact that people will think they are scoring, what bull****e. I think that mweb need to catch a wake up and smell the coffee......

This is the point. MWEB subscribers (they like to call them "members") are used to paying R145 per month. So, MWeb are offering to move them to ADSL for the same price.

One of the cheaper Home ADSL options will easily be cheaper than dial-up, even at callmore rates, so, for those used to paying R145/month it's a better deal.

The fact that it isn't a particularly good deal is beside the point. Most people become locked into their e-mail address, and it's too much hassle to change, so they pay up every month.

For a long time now, you have been able to get dial-up Internet Access for well under R100 per month. Even MWeb offer a sub-R100 Internet and e-mail account (Polka). Supposedly, for your R145/month you get a bundle of extra services that the folks paying less don't get. Your loss if you don't use them, I suppose.

I'd like to bet that my young friend at MWeb had a hard time persuading the marketing dummies to go for this deal at all! ;)

dude it seems to me that you were swindled into a contract or something, and to make yourself feel better about being ripped off you choose to defend mweb so strongly. i can't find any other explanation for this.

the reason i mentioned that is because mweb are the ones with the biggest marketing budget, making things seem all rosy. for example have mweb signed the adslpetition to reduce adsl pricing in this country if they really cared about the pathetic broadband situation? i dont see their banner on the page, but most other ISP's have. the ONLY reason mweb will complain about telkom, is because telkom are swindling customers, and hence revenue, from them - no other reason. and vice versa. these two belong in the same boat, they both market towards unsuspecting people.

call it what you want about getting more people off dial-up and onto adsl - who are we to tell these people how to use their adsl connection and that 1gig should be enough for them. they might want to start exploring the possibilities of broadband that couldn't be done on dial-up, and theres no way that 1gig or even 3 gig would be enough for that. why do we just assume that these people's usage patterns will stay the same when they change from dial-up to broadband - that they'll mainly be browsing/using email? when i was on dial-up i wished that i could have afforded broadband to stream audio/video, run a webcam conversation at decent speed etc. but off course i'd be labelled abuser.

having said all that, my main gripe with mweb is why dont they provide a CHOICE of their packages? why not provide someone to opportunity to choose whether or not they want these premium services of encarta, photo album etc. so why do they INSIST on not providing an alternative?
mweb's main source of revenue, as with telkom, are their business solutions. one may argue if they dont offer these premium services, they'd only generate a profit of R10 per account or whatever, hence can't pay for call centres, marketing etc. the fact is they'll be generating a profit nonetheless, which will be significant if you take into consideration the number of accounts. but the main source for their millions come from their business solutions, thats where they get their budget from
 
As long as MWEB can take a 100% profit margin on anything they offer they couldnt give a damn whether the underlying offer is good value or not to consumers.

If Telkom charged Mweb R10 per MB, MWEB wouldn't mind at all as long as they can charge their users R20 per MB.

That's why you never hear MWEB complaning about Telkom's prices.

Only in SA have we been conned to believe that bandwidth = traffic.
Bandwidth is the capacity of the pipe.
Caps are limits on TRAFFIC

Our overseas peers get broadband service according to the bandwidth - there is no cap and no line rental.

If ICASA can't open the landlines, then they must allow competition from wisps ready to make satellite GIB cheaply available.

All the current DSL offerings depend on a DSL Telkom line - which means >R500 per month. Yahoo give their guys broadband for $15 per month

Well said there is a believe that these consumer paterns will remain the same if they move from dialup, where the main focus is to be quick as save cost and limit calls during the day. Now if they have 24/7 they will be able to see, do and learn so much more they will quickly find themselves exceding that cap in no time. What a surprise is that not going to be ? lol
