Telkom's giga-ripoff

Well... it doesnt matter who started it.... its Telkom being thrown in the mud, and that cant be all bad ;-)

Richard.. I think you would also be upset if you started something and were the creater of such said item and everyone stole your hard work.

This was discussed last week as well when it was brought up and back to the MYADSL forums after it had been doing the rounds via email and somebody posted it back on these forums. If I was stuart.. I would be VERY PISSED that somebody stole my work with out even giving a reference.. if I'm not mistaken.. its also illegal!

The more bad advertising for Telkom the better. Maybe it is a good idea that the "father" of the idea will e-mail it to as many newspapers as possible. This example which tolks to the avarage person in the street is much better them talking about gigs and caps which is too complicated.

I actually found it on the vent page of hellkom.

Stuart...please pm me on this. I am with Independent Newspapers in Durban and want to have your correct details in case the Editor decides to publish YOUR comparison!

I think this article doing the rounds is brilliant dont get me wrong. What drives me mad though is that this auther did not even bother to change the wording.. its a direct copy and paste  Is that what journalism is about now days?

If that is the case why are we so shocked when we read all the lies that are in the papers, all we are doing is endorsing one author when he agrees with our views yet we criticize authors who get it slightly wrong... Are we not being as hypocritical as they are then ???

Yeah, they are all trying to get in on the act Stuart. It's a great comparison.

I must say though, I am waiting with bated breath to hear Telkoms media response to this article seeing as though it has done the rounds in one way or another in a few papers, if they dare, hehe.
:D

Kalvaer,

I do agree that its plain plajorism(spelling?) but its not illegal. It was posted in a public forum, hence it was contributed to the public domain. If the original author said "All rights reserved - Unauthorised use of this information is prohibited", then that changes it completely.
I would say it really un-ethical, but not illegal.

Richard

Maybe not illegal but he didn't even change the wording.. he actually copied and pasted the exact document!!! where is states "I decided to do a little comparison ..." I am sure there would be a few people other than me who would have a field day with just how borderline that is to legal or not. Since I am not a lawyer I would not know but it sickens me that this is what our papers have become.

I really cant believe this author and it shocks me almost as much as Telkom does.. not as much.. but damn close

Who the hell cares who's idea it was, see the bigger picture people, bad mouth Telkom! Do it for the cause!

Ahhhh Did I not already say that I think its a good idea...

Anyway I'll again say "that is not the point". I actually feel for stuart or who ever started the damn thing and know I would also be upset if it happened to me.. wait.. I also already said that didn't I..

Does anyone actually read anymore... It really does not seem like it. Maybe that is why these Journalists dont bother thinking for themselves anymore.. I mean why should you if nobody bothers reading what you say.. So just copy what everyone else says.

Yeah it sux! .. they are too lazy to find their own material, to a newspaper all that counts is sales - not the crap thats between the covers.. but it looks like Inet Bridge also have the same article

:(

Hi Stuartgunter and others

I have just published a similar story from BusinessDay on our front page. Congratulations for doing the calculations and for spreading the word. It is excellent that it made it into the major publications!

Regards,

RPM

It is highly unethical, especially since it is being published in all the papers. These journalists are all taking credit for a comparison that was NOT done by themselves, but done by a 3rd party and as such they should not be stating that they did the comparison.

As much as we need to expose Telkom and need all the ammo that we can muster, to blatantly tout it as your work when the reality is that it is not (regardless of whether it was published on a forum without copyright) is downright disgusting!

Look, stop complaining! If this was something that cost stuartgunter an arm and a leg to produce, then sure, it would be something to get all worked up about! But, what did it cost? A couple of minutes, ok, say an hour? So, don't make it a bigger issue than it is!

I agree that they could at least have giving credit to stuart, it would be the ethical right thing to do! But, like it has been stated, it was published on a public forum, with no copyright notice, thus it becomes part of the public domain!

Actually, stuartgunter, you should feel proud! Your story was so good, they couldn't find anything to make it better! :D
