Hi Forumites!!!

There are many members that wonder how their MTN Broadband performs in comparison with other wirless broadband users.

If you have some spare time please do the Telkom speed test and give your area and tower you logon to, aslo state if you are using GPRS, EDGE or 3G. State wether you are connecting with a phone/modem (please give model and manufacturer name). Speed test URL: http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/dsl/speed.html

Thanks and regards,

Mr.G

Interesting comparing to others. This is in Kuilsrivier and is not Edge covered. My speed in PE is better (due to edge). It is via Bluetooth on a Nokia 6230 - MTN.

Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 45.5 (kilobits/second)

As you can see Vodacom is faster here than MTN. I also have erratic MTN reception.

It remains fun to sit in a Caravan park with internat acess faster than telkom dial up!!

In Pta I normally use MTN due to lower data bundle cost. In areas with EDGE coverage MTN is a lot faster than VODA.

A 3G Voda tower is being erected near my home in PTA. I will be upgrading to 3 G in Jan!!

Recommendations of cards will be appreciated.

I'm using MTN 3G in Raslouw, Centurion with 3/5 signal strength.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 42.984 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 94.9 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 11.6 (kiloBytes/second)

Looking at Sparky za's EDGE speed, my 3G is a bit dissapointing...

BUT at least is it always at +- 11.5 KBs/sec...

.

My MTN connections "dies" multiple times a day. My connection sends data but receives nothing. It's not the data card or the phone as Vodacom works perfectly on both. Vodacom is also "faster" in PTA East.

Just thought I would add this in for comparison.

Using my Nokia 6630 on GPRS, Rx lvl of -20 and C1 of 90. We have a MTN Microcell in our server room, which is why the signal is so good. They may make it EDGE compatible, if they do I will post again.

AFAIK you have to be in a 3G zone with one of the new 128K Sim cards

You need to be in 3G Coverage, 32K Sim Card will suffice

Again in Krugersdorp - this time i used a Nokia 9300, hoping that MTN had activated EDGE in Krugersdorp CBD --but alas --still GPRS speeds :
