I just spoke to the call center and they said that the time from order to installation has moved to 4-6 weeks. I will only be able to find out when they can install 3 weeks from now. The timeline from the consultant was 3 weeks from order to installation, another case of useless service from Telkom.

That blows!!!

I phoned the call centre to place my order a couple of weeks back and then it was a 3 week wait apparently.

I'm now trying to get the local office's number to see if there is any chance of bumping up the date...

What can you expect. Telkom have a habit of going backwards.

Slower speeds, higher prices, longer response times - proudly brought to you by Telkom.

Dont believe a thing they tell you. It could be anything. There doesnt seem to be a set policy on this, especially not one which is enforced.

Filthy scum that is Telkom

I live in a prime Cape Town area with ADSL users all around me, why do they have to go and tell me they need to install ports on my phone exchange before anything can be done, and they dont even know how long its going to take. WHERE IS THIS SNO!!!!

Just got my dsl installed two weeks ago. I live near the CBD of Cape Town and i also had to wait for new ports to be installed.

Try calling them every day. It is a mission and we shouldn't have to go through it, but it seems to help.

Also if u can, try to get the number of one of the technicians. That really helps. The guys that came to fit my dsl were genuine oaks, nothing like the disgusting organisation for whom they work.

Took me about 2 months from ordering to installation...

Let's all pray for SNO this winter....

ADSL order process

1. Phone 10219, apply and ask the consultant to send you an e-mail confirmation of the order.
2. Phone 0800 456 786 and ask the consultant when the network design team will be complete with the functional spec.
3. Phone 0800 456 786 and ask the consultant when the installation date will be.
4. Phone 0800 456 786 and confirm the installation date.
5. Techie arrives and does the installation.

I'm at step 2 at the moment and step 2 will be completed on Thursday.

They've already given me my new number.

I imagine you mean step 5 will be completed by Thurs. How can you be so confident? I had all that, installation date, confirmed right up until the day before. They didnt pitch and I still dont know where they are.

No, I mean step 2 will be completed by Thursday.
I've gone to our company's Telkom account manager and asked him to expidite the installation, I spoke to him today after I called the call center and he's on it.

if it was only that simple.

1.Phone 10219, wait half an hour then someone to answer, then you take another 30 minutes to explain to the consultant what ADSL is.
2.Phone 0800 456 786 and explain to them, that you actually have to work for you salary.
3.Phone 0800 456 786 and ask the consultant if lunch breaks are really four hours long at telkom and if Solitaire is part of the job description.
4.Phone 10219 and start steps 1,2 and 3 all over again
5.Give up and wait for the SNO.

Funniest has to be, when i was on line fault query, phoned at 1, answered at 3.30, asked the consultant, if they are having lots of faults at the moment, and she said, no, "i was just at lunch".

You must have super natural contacts that I dont know about cause they are busy with the installation at the moment. Quite frankly I'm shocked but in a good way.

If this wasn't SO sad, it would be funny. We're actually running around after Telkom for them to provide us with a service that will, at the end of the day, enrich them.

/me wonders what the installation time line will be come the SNO...

Even if the SNO doesn't initially compete with the SNO with their pricing, it will be interesting to see what installation timelines they will guarantee. If they offer shorter timelines, I'd like to see Telkom's response to that seeing that they don't have the capacity to deal with their current backlog!!!

Hurry up and wait, 5 months later

A applied for ADSL in August 2005 - still no activation despite numerous calls - get the same response everytime, they'll escalate it etc. That's 5 months and still waiting. First they told me I had to wait till a port comes available - whether that means I have to wait for a current holder to die I don't know. I'm in Centurion, not exactly a remote town.

They do port recovery when someone with ADSL moves out of the area, if you're lucky you'll be able to get it, Telkom is having seriaas issues with the amount of ports availible, they dont have enough people to install these ports on the exchanges so they are using outside contractors, thse contractors are apparently generally useless for the simple fact that they get paid no matter if the installation is working or not.

Does having a self-installation decrease the time? I'm trying to find out for a friend of mine. We had ours installed in April 2005 - it wasn't so bad back then...
