Been enquiring over the last couple days to get my 3 Gig account downgraded.
Here's the nitty gritty if anyone is interested.

Person to speak to regarding upgrades and downgrades:
Koena Headbush (pronounced Kwena)
[email protected]

He's a hard man to get hold of. So phone the orcs, ask to speak to his PA.
Give your name and number. He'll phone back.

If you are on a 24 Month contract:
You can upgrade your account, you cannot downgrade your account.
To downgrade your account, you need to buy the modem, which puts you onto a 30 day account. Then you can downgrade.
To enquire about buying out your modem, speak to the accounts department, Koena doesn't handle it.

If you are on a 30 day account:
You can upgrade and downgrade to your hearts content. :D

Crash do you have any idea on how they work out what you still owe for the modem. Is it pro rata to the amount of time you have left in the contract. IE if you are 12 months into a 24 month contract then you pay 50% of the quoted new price for the modem?

Just interesting... was looking for the same information myself, and decided to have a shufti over here.

Thanx goes to Crash for making the info available. We want to ditch ISDN (too much hellskommel problems) and move over to iBurst on the client's side.

Basically we will be doing VNC/Remote Desktop, file transfers (plain FTP) and telnetting to the client's side. Anybody have had experience with these on iBurst yet?

Kind regards

PS If there was a way, I'd already PM'ed a beer to Crash for his posting!

Daveogg, They calculate it based on the remaining months of the contract.
So your idea of 12 months left = 50% left to pay on retail price is correct.

The_Unbeliever - Amstel please :D

VNC is incredibly slow on iBurst. I think it's the shaping to be honest.
If you configure VNC to run in Compression - Best, Quality - fast, it is usable. (Windows VNC, Use TightVNC (Best Compression) )
If you go through an SSH Tunnel to the Client VNC Server ,it seems much better.

SSH and Telnet work fine.
SCP on the other hand is a bit slow (4 - 16 Kbytes/sec), again due to shaping I think.

Upgrade/Downgrade to your heart's content? Not likely.

I enquired about upgrading my account today. It is important to note that you have to give one calender month's notice. I wanted my upgrade to be effective from February. But it will only be effective from March.

Why does it takes ONE MONTH to change your package!?!!?!??

What century are we living in!?!!??

Anyway, just thought I'd warn you all. Submit your requests early.

It is pretty much standard practice. A bit silly (especially them forcing you to wait 30 days before you can pay them MORE money), but it is possible that their systems do not allow for it.

Are there any costs when upgrading your account? We got charged an extra R109.xx when we upgraded our account in January. We're on a month-to-month contract. Accounting department is really useless. And it's not even iBurst that does our account, we're with NashuaBroadband...geez!

Checked end May for upgrade (25th), they do it at month end and need 7 (working?) days' notice, thus waiting for end June... There's not even debit order processing involved since I pay with bank transfer.

I would have thought the cost of the modem would be the number of months left on your contract multiplied by the difference between the package you are on with a contract and the package you are on without a contract.

So for example, if you are on a 3G 24 month and have 12 months left, I would think the cost would be 12 X (R699 - R599) = R1200. After all the only difference between a month-to-month and a long term contract is that the long-term contract you get the modem bundled.

This Information is no longer valid people!

If you cancel your 24 month account, you pay a surrender value now (as mentioned in another thread, although I did not believe it....)

So if you have 10 months left on your 24 month G3 account, you will pay 10 * R699 to cancel it. R6990 in total.

YOU DO NOT get ten months access. This is just to cancel the account!

BEWARE.....

DO NOT CANCEL IF YOU ARE ON A 24 MONTH CONTRACT. Let it run out if they give that line.

would like to upgrade

im on a 3 gig cap at the moment and want to go uncapped. what is the price for uncapping my line and how long will it take to go uncapped?

You cannot have an uncapped service. The largest cap you can get from IBurst is 9GB.

I-burst hoax

Yes Fine I-burst has fast download. IF. A VERY BIG IF. You have good signal and low FER. But it is a big hassel just to change your bandwidth if your on a month to month account. I got my iburst mid november. Just to see what the fuss is about i started on 512mb. Everything was fine till i noticed 512mb for R299 is a Rip off if i can get 3GB for R600 which is R100 for 512mb instead of R299. So i popped them a mail to change my account to 3gb. Now i understood that if you want a upgrade you have to let them know before month end. I did that. i got my 3gb on 26 november without my knowledge. On the 29 november i checked my bandwidth and saw about 2.6 gb remaining. So in the end i had about 2day to use the bandwidth or loose it. I mailed them again and said i wanted the 3gb for december. NO REPLY. I got charged for the 3gb.

New story: Still trying to get the 3gb for december. Got told i need to be a user for 3months before i can upgrade. REPLY: THEY ALREADY UPGRADED MY PACKAGE A WEEK AFTER I SIGNED UP. I Just got another reply: Don't worry the accounts department will look into it and you will get your 3gb on the 1st of January. Now i am already ticked off and strongly thinking about another ISP.

So to the comment that its easy to change your package on a month to month. IT IS NOT!!!!!!

Don't quote me but Shaun Green once told me he would never hold an unhappy customer into a contract. I was led to believe that on returning the hardware the contract would be terminated. Again I reiterate don't quote me...

I am sad to say that you you either misunderstood or you were misinformed. The lady in the accounts department made it very clear that there is absolutely no recourse if you are tied into a contract. Under no circumstances will they let you out of the contract, ever. The only option you have is to pay the remaining monthly fees once-off and cancel your service.

Guys, don't hold poor Shaun to that comment. When iBurst was WBS and the number of subscribers could be counted on your fingers and toes, that might have been the case but not anymore. Like any big(ger) company, there have to be processes and if they let every unhappy customer just cancel, they would have problems. Some customers want to cancel for legit reasons but many are just tata ma chance. (eg they don't want it any more or something better has come along). Sorry for you but if you sign for 24 months this is the downside. If you don't like it, buy the modem outright. Then you haven't got that problem. You can't have your cake and eat it...
