Hi folks

I have just received a press statement from Telkom in which they mention that they will introduce a static IP ADSL service. No time frame has been given and unfortunately I have no additional information.

I have requested more info and will let you know as soon as I hear anything.

Regards,

RPM

Well if Telkom will offer this, then they will have to allow IPC peering clients ie. IS to offer it aswell, else I hope this is the final nail in the Telkom anti-competitive coffin.

My Public IP on my adsl hasnt changed for the last 2 months - I have made posts about this before...

Not to sound like the novice that my post-count suggests but what exactly are the benefits of a fixed IP compared to a dynamic one?

To mention a few - You will be able to host your own SMTP / POP server, more smtp, as you are not scrutanized by other peoples IP abuse...

Play games online, whithout having to use dynamic DNS services....run VPN's to your office...!!

Clipse .. we all know that they DON'T have to allow anything.

It'll be like Dr Evil

100 Billion Million Trillion Gillian Pillian...

And anyways 99% of home users are not going to want/ need a static IP...

they might if they understood or were told what they could do with a static ip. This happens to be the case in more mature internet markets!

Maybe not, but that will change fast enough once we have decent connectivity! And, especially for the SMME market, this is fantastic news! DynDNS doesn't always work correctly for us!

yeah i understand its all good for the SMMEs but the std home user wouldn't use it much if at all... i totally agree its happy days for the rest. :)

Well, it means ones IP address will not change in the middle of a download, so I think even home users would like it.

well you hoping that, chances are they retrain transparent proxy which means for download/accessing servers it seems the dreaded transparent proxy ip as well as your own, and most just take the transparent as they do now.

As Someone said before, the price will make us puke.

"For the affordable price oif just R500 per month you can have one static IP address" terms and conditions apply - Telkom does not guarantee the staticness of said IP address

One question concerning the Static IP. Pardon my ignorance :o

To have a static IP address does it not automatically mean uncapped?

No. Current uncapped services have static ip addresses - this is a "standard" that has been adopted by the resellers.

I would prefer a dynamic IP for various reasons. But having the option of a static is nice. Rather have it and not need than need it and not have it as I always say.. :)
