E-TV had a news story in its 7 o'clock news about the SNO. E-TV said they have been trying to get hold of the SNO MD for 2 days without success to find out when the SNO will be operational and what its name will be. They even reported that the MD's assistant turned his phone off after a while when E-TV started bugging him too much wanting information on the SNO.

The SNO is getting bad press and it's not even operational.

I have to say that if what you're saying is true, it's most worrying. The fact that they aren't going out there and doing interviews and interacting with the media tells us two things right away: firstly, they don't care too much about customers at this point and secondly their planning sucks. Telkom v2 perhaps?

Let's hope they're keeping quiet because they don't want to give away any ideas of their products.

If they start saying things about dropping prices and cheap ADSL Telkom will pre-emptively drop their prices and lock in businesses into contracts, and ruin their chance of getting customers, before they even launch.

At least that's what I hope.

they're dancing around in circles singing omig0d we got the licence

if you think SNO is going to fix telkom, I think its a bit of a pipe-dream... government has a stake in SNO too.

I think ppl are getting a little too excited by the SNO.

We'll probably only see consumer focused (wholesale) offerings from them in the 12-24 month timeframe. Telcos arent just built in a few months.

But a lot of the network is supposed to be in place already?! Isn't eskom part of all this? I'm asking. A big player who already has a network in place - transnet? (or a lot of the backbone anyway?!)

...MD's are busy people - surely these interviews should be set up weeks in advance - not just some random phone call from E... and most 'substantive' companies have press officers... Mmm.

A network alone does not make a telco, especially at a consumer level.

Still, I believe their national backbone is pretty far advanced, but without regional & local loops, it's only of value to large wholesale customers (e.g. ISPs & corporates).

The man in the street is still going to have to wait quite a while.

If true, this would seem to imply that they were taken by surprise with their application.

One would expect all of the groundwork to have been completed by now and that there are clear strategies in place as to services and market segment to be targeted.

If they are only now developing a business plan, then I for one will not consider moving, (much as I want to) as it would be patently obvious that their management is incapable of managing a piss-up in a brewery.

They are waiting for Telkom and DoC to tell them what the bussines plan is.
They are not allowed to compeat, it is just another arm of Telkom. Intended to make it look like Telkom has compertition so that the DoC can continue to levy indirect taxes via its large intrest in both operators.

No need to rush, it's all part of the gravy train.

Look, I'd play it pretty damned close to the vest if I were the SNO. You know that as soon as Telkom gets even a sniff of any plans for better/cheaper service or competition they will get legislation moving faster than buggery.

I'd shut up and then come in with all my guns blazing. Only way they'll make an impact.

Hey maybe they should call themselves NoComm.... cos they seem to be very lacking in the communications department. Not a very good sign i'm afraid. And im not saying we expect them to give out their game plan (which I doubt exists) but heck at least some info would be good.

An MD of a new company, who will want to get a market share, and he's not available to the press at short notice? That really stinks! IMNSHO he would have jumped at the opportunity if this were a normal company! Oh wait, a big part is owned by guverment... so it's no wonder! MD must be on his first holiday in Saudi! :D

well if you were guarenteed no competition for x yrs and the only other competition is expensive, i'd back them to make a huge profit reguardless. The doc likes messing things up like this instead of just allowing alot of competition. I wonder who has their finger in the pie more the goverment as 'the goverment' or the anc ? btw did that investors list come out yet?

I should hope the SNO has a game plan... they're investing Billions in the country after all.

The whole thing seems very ad-hoc... all the time in the world... we'll still be talking, complaining about this in 5 years time - while they slooowly get their sh#t together... ...according to other threads - businesss is generally happy with the monies they pay for telecommunications... me fears we are the only ones with a gripe/me fears we are a very low priority/  /me fears SNO in bed with Ivy - therefore unavailable for comment :(

Forget the government and even to some extent Transtel & Eskom.

The CEO, most senior execs, business plans, operational methodology & technology mostly imported from India. Make no mistake who the SNO is ... basically the SA division of the VSNL/Tata global networking conglomorate.
