thinking about changing my backup account and for R189 for 25GB it's a serious deal. what are the chances it supports torrents???

Anyones feedback would be useful...thanks!

I think its only local access, but could be wrong, so if you have access to local torrents you are going to be in heaven, else you can access the news server yum yum

To my knowledge, this uses the IS backbone. Now, IS international is unbelievably bad during the day, as is their FTP access. Their news server kicks @ss though - get the account just for that if you are into that type of thing...

My current solution is to use IS for local and news server, and to use a SAIX account from browsing. I run both in parallel - with my router connecting to IS ADSL, and a router connection in bridging mode from my PC to SAIX. Then, set up a persistant route on your PC routing news server and whatever else via the IS ADSL. Get best of both worlds.

Since I only use around 1GB for browsing (and a LOT for downloading), it all works very well.

I take it u do most of your downloading via these newsgroups then? Would you mind giving me a rundown of how i can get that set up? I have a vague idea and there have been a few posts on this topic and links to websites that tell u how to do it, but i am still a bit in the dark...:-P

Currently leeching a whole lot off local torrents which is cool, but i hear newsgroups are the way to go so any help would be appreciated!

Laters

News Groups - the short

1) Get yourself a news server easynews, giganews, or news.is.co.za (news.saix.net sucks piles)
2) Get yourself a news reader (newsbinpro is my choice $30 - worth every cent)
3) Get a NZB service - using newzbin.com (note the Z not S). Currently has payment problems, but at 2pounds per MONTH, worth it)
4) NZB are "links" to the stuff you want. Beats the cr@p out of downloading headers.
5) Put the two together (the news reader loads the NZBs and downloads your files), and voila!

Oh, and read up on PAR2 files (I use QuickPar for those). These basically repair small damages, and allow you to complete files that are missing parts.

Cool man. Thanks for the speedy response :-)

A few questions- Does one have to pay for all newsgoups? I am not trying to be cheap, as i am willing to pay if the service is good. Its just i dont have any experience with this stuff yet and would like to try it out a bit before commiting...

Also, what sort of speeds are you getting when downloading stuff? I am on 192 and get between 20 and 30k on local torrents which i am quite happy with.

Well you get all the newsgroups as part of the news server, but i am sure there are some newsgroups that falls outside of IS's scope which you usually have to subscribe too, but have to say IS has about 95% of the groups. On a good night I get between 35 and 45k on the newsserver with my 384 account

Am getting 32.9 KB/s at the mo from Easynews

so anybody got the full details on this openweb account?
Can we use it for local DC++,torrents, etc.?
or is it a surfing/news only account?

If I remeber correctly, there are no restrictions on the standard IS-2GB and IS-3GB accounts for using Torrents etc excepting of course the 2GB international and then the rest local. The openbrowse options (Proxy accounts) are limited to Browsing and Email. They may not be used for torrents etc. There is nothing stopping you disabling the proxy and going crazy with local torrents and only using the proxy for international browsing and email.

Please don't take this as gospel. Wait for MrBeep to confirm on the forums or email him directly.

Cheers

Abe

Hey Friends,

Thank-you so much for your interest in OpenWeb. It is really heart-warming.

OpenBrowse unfortunately does not allow any downloading, including, but not limited to: P2P; torrents etc.

It was created mainly for browsing email etc.

Locally of course, as Abe said, you can go crazy!!

We do however now have a Socks add-on to OpenBrowse entitled: Socks XTRA! This allows you to feed your MSN Messengers, ICQ, Skype's etc our Socks Server details, thus allowing use of these programs after cap. This add-on only costs R39 per month extra!

Please do not hesitate to email me directly: [email protected] should you require any more information.

Have a healthy afternoon,
MrBEEP

If you mean "news server" and not "news group", then most are pay sites. (a news group as someone else said, is a "folder" in a news server.
Go to newzbin.com and do a search of five - searches are free, you only pay if you want the NZB (which you need to download something).
Search for "usenet server" on google, some are cheaper than others and others are based on usage. Or try the IS one. MrBeep can probably set you up with an account, and let you cancel after a month if you think it is sh1te.

Anyway, I get 56kB or so after 5pm and before 7am on my ADSL384. And all day Sat and Sun. During the day, it can drop to 2kB easy though.

Well if you have an IS account its just news.is.co.za , you can get yourself a newsreader program like newsleecher or use the default(crappy) one in outlook/express

For all the guys and gals who have never used Newsgroups before here is a quick 1,2,3 guide using XanaNews (which is free).

http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10xananews.htm

When running XanaNews the first time it will ask you for you name and surname. It is not advisable to use your real email address as newsgroups are regularly scanned by spammers.

Next it will ask you for a Server Account Name and Server Name. The Server Account Name is a friendly name but the Server Name should be "news.saix.net" for SAIX users and "news.is.co.za" for IS users.

The News Servers don't require a password so you can ignore the next screen. For ADSL users you can also leave the screen that follows as the internet is permanently connected. Press the 'Ok' button to complete the setup.

The first thing that will happen is the application will refresh the list of newsgroups from the news server. This can take a while as there can be thousands of news groups on a server. Once this refresh has finished, you can right click on the news server and select "Show Newsgroup List". This will display a list of all of the newsgroups on the server. Select the groups you want to view by double clicking on them. There is a filter box at the bottom of the window that will let you filter out only the groups that match the text entered.

You can retrieve the latest messages by right clicking on a newsgroup or news server and selecting "Get Messages" from the list in the popup menu.

XanaNews also has other options such as batch downloads for offline viewing and will also allow you to view multiple news servers.

Cheers

Abe

I would strongly!:) recommend ignoring this step if you are after binaries. Use a Usenet search engine and NZBs. Quicker, easier, better.
www.newzbin.com is very good.
