Fixed-line phone fixation ‘is costing SA’

Yea .. that's why MTN, Cell C and Voda exist and are fast stealing the wired network users .
Marketing B.S.
We know wired communications is dying, ask telkom, even they know this.

The delegates met officials from SA’s communications department but were unable to arrange a meeting with Telkom to discuss the new technologies.

How come this does not surprise me.

It's embarrassing how far behind we really are....

Government’s vested interest in Telkom and its extensive fixed-line infrastructure may be hindering it from grabbing the full potential of new developments, says Sang-Jin Lee, a director-in-chief in Korea’s information and communication ministry.

yep... agreed...

This might be wishful thinking on my part, but does anyone know if the technology exists to improve pings for us gamers if we move to a wireless broadband solution provider?

As it stands, I'd probably need a powerful antenna setup at my home to ensure suitable signal strength (previous test-versions weren't strong enough) but with WiMax etc. coming down the line, I'm wondering if it'll be in a gamer's interest to consider this alternative.

If not, a fixed-line provider will always have a dedicated gaming market - so it would actually be in their best interest to start catering for our needs. Currently we're being ignored. I know, it's sad, isn't it?

Thanks for your constructive replies.

The odd thing i find with wireless solutions here is that they are suckier with latency etc cost alot to set up, AND cost as much and often more than fixed line solution/adsl. yet we complain more about adsl line rental. Why is this ?(excl bandwidth costs.) The expectation with fixed line is often that the medium pre-exists and is cheaper, but how much should mobility cost ?

I say at this point it would be a good idea (wireless for all) - kill Telkom's market share and force them to lower their prices through competition and people migrating to a cheaper broadband service (wireless). And then move back when they've caught the hint.

The DoC should employ some of these Koreans and get SA caught up in providing a cheap worldclass broadband service like they do. Hopefully, not just another international voice emphasizing the crisis in SA, that the DoC/Govt ignores along with the rest (Last year was Brazil, INTUG and others)

Gewd idea MFour !
Hey Korea ... we surrender under the following conditions ...
What do you mean you have not declared war ?
Well - we declare war on you then !

Koreans come here - work out in 5 minutes what the issues are - something DOC etal haven't been able to work out in 10 years.

More working brain cells in one Korean than in entire DOC.

DOC is proof of Darwin's theory of evolution. Lungs evolved from years of toy-toy, brains shrunk from years of disuse.

Bit harsh dude - actually blame it on the A word.

Point is - the koreans had a vision - they made south korea happen... Trevor is going to put 360 billion?! into local government? but they can't spend what they got...how they going to spend 360 billion?! Could just as easy put 360 billion in telecommunications - or power - or any one of a dozen other things. Koreans invested heavily in their network - they believed telecommunications would bring them into the first world (and it did.) They come here - see the poverty - but still believe the network is the future and we should be building it as fast as we can. And as far as I know S.Korea is hardwired - not wireless - they come here and immediately see vistas of wireless. And as usual telkom doesn't want to know.

They believed putting in their network would bootstrap their whole economy. And they see it here - why can't anybody else? Profit, profit, ad infinitum. No vision for the good of the country.

One should combine wireless with fixed wired.
Connecting 200 houses to a wireless tower via parabolics will quickly
zap our 2.4ghz spectrum.
But if you wire 20 houses to a AP, you only have 10 wireless transmitters - much
less spectrum pollution.

Which A word? The one used to describe the past or the one generally used to describe incompetents at the top?

I think after nearly 12 years of fully participative democracy, we should let go of the first one and focus on removing incumbents that can truly be described by the second A word (i.e. if you are not clear about the second one try @sshole. It does describe the incompetents properly in charge of the DOC, Telkom and Eskom).

Yeah right - but they are screwing us every month so somewhere we are not so bright.
