Can anyone with 64k Diginet please let me know the total cost per month, maybe with a cost breakdown if you can. Also, what are the installation and equipment costs?

I've been checking on the Telkom site but it's just confusing. :(

This is how it works,

based on you distance from the ISP lets say under 50km

The line rental is R 1650 per month and from a company say ODS you will pay 3000 for a 64k GIB line, that means no shapping, no capping full international or local bandwidth

Hope that helps

That sounds much more expensive than I thought...

What other options are there besides this 64k GIB line??

ADSL line with uncapped router ? http://www.ods.co.za

or a 1:4 split on the line called silver package we sell that at about R 2000 ex line rental of R 1650

Best to go with a fiber uncapped adsl. 5 static ips, good bandwidth as it via SAT3 fibre Cost R 2500 plus adsl line 449. you then have a 512k connection unlimited.

Diginet is ancient technology anyways... and believe me, 64k is not enough.
That's not the point, I need to find out pricing for comparison purpouses and diginet actually gets support from Telkom.

You want to install ADSL for a corporate customer?? Good luck with that :p

I apologize... thought you were looking at it for home purposes... sorry.

Yes, I do agree that ADSL for corp cust doesn't cut it.

No apology required ;)

Lets forget about ADSL for the time being...

Are there any ISP packages for diginet that are less than R3000pm?

Quick - iBurst offer static IP addies on the 6Gb and 9Gb packages - will these help? I like the subscription model of iBurst as you can purchase additional bandwidth should the need arise. (Should you have good coverage, that is...)

Most resellers will come and test your coverage first before you sign-up for iBurst.

With our 64k Diginet line I've seen that our total mail usage is no more than 6Gb a month, but this will differ from company to company.

You will need to have a look at what you need, either way you look at it diginet is expensive.

Firstly as already mentioned you will be charged line rental based on distance etc. Secondly ISP's tend to break the links down into packages like this;

Local INT Monthly
64 0 1600
64 64 3200
128 64 4300
....... ........ .........
1024 512 66100

Those are actual prices, (from IS if I remember), also you will need to factor in router rental which ranges but can be as high as R1200p/m

The packages are broken down further into "classes" ie contention etc. This determines your service level.

My suggestion is this;

Decide what the line will be used for...Mail, Browsing?
How many users will be sharing the line?
Is the line critical to your business?

For example, if you are intend to host a mail server for a company of 40 people doing business primarily in South Africa you could get a 64KB local package with 16KB international for your mail server and just get ADSL for browsing. Your costs might look something like this then;

Diginet line rental: R1600p/m
Diginet ISP: R2000p/m
ADSL Rental R680p/m
ADSL ISP: R500 (guesstimate depending on bandwidth usage)
Router Rental: R1000 (estimate)

Your total monthly cost is then R5780 and you have the "stability" of diginet and the affordability of ADSL.

Also if your ADSL is down you can squeeze everyone through the diginet for a day or two until it is resolved.

PS: Installation starts at about R2500 (ISP & Telkom)

@ alchamy

That's more or less what we're doing here - we use the diginet line for emails (and windowsupdate) whilst using the adsl line for web browsing.

64k is too slow for proper web browsing, and is just right for emails. To help things further, I've configured the Exchange server to send mails larger than 6Mb after hours in order to prevent congestion on the diginet line, which can happen quite easily.

Everybody's happy with this arrangement, and so far no serious problems was experienced, save when the diginet line went down for a day or so, but it was fixed quickly. (Some teklom techie messed the lines up by mistake...)

If you're only using it for EMail, in this case Telkom Business is the best route (don't flame for this, they're the cheapest here)...

R1900 a month, total cost for a 64kb/s internet connection to SAIX with 8 IP's and 16kb of shared international.

You can't even get a diginet for that, let alone most ISP's fees on top of that.

D

My company is now at the stage where a 64k Diginet is actually more of a bottleneck - it just chokes on emails with 20Mb attachments...

I'm looking at other options at this stage.

BTW - we pay more or less R2600 for our 64k line.

I've done contracting jobs for a publishing company. They had a 64k line and it cost them around R6200.

40 people trying to surf the net. And send emails (not to mention receive the email) is not just a bottleneck, its a damn near pain in the ass.

"Why is the internet so slow"
"Gee gorsh, is it because your mail server is trying to download 150meg of email while trying to send 300meg plus 39 other people trying to go to www.datingbuzz.com THROUGH A 64K LINE!"

They got very pissed off with me after a while. So I had to come up with a proposal (note, this isnt what I do primarily) to how I can not ONLY speed everything up, but save them 50% of the expense.

Now. Please take note. In around 4 months time I was there. The diginet line went offline 7 times. Sometimes for up to 3 days. Since I got them their uncapped business adsl 512k line. The only down time which was experienced is if there were heavy storms. (Satelite array) And this was only international. Mail worked like a charm... all they had to bear with is the slow to non-existant international website access.

So. Having said that. ADSL with a static option is the way to go. If you REALLY want to have no down time (aka cloud cover ruins your international) then go get the fibre option which would set you back a bit more.

I would also recommend getting Mail Marshall, a local one, and routing any mails (incoming and outgoing) through there. It's perfect because when your server goes down, it piles up the email for later delivery, and your server isn't trying to send to international mail servers (which probably would reject your mail as spam because you need to setup reverse dns lookups etc which is a pain in the ass if your ISP is a stick in the mud)

Diginet is such an old technology that if you go to the USA and ask about it. They'll have to google it because in THEIR lifetime, they haven't experienced diginet.

The costs associated of installing a diginet line is also huge. It costs Telkom almost 10x more to install the line for you. So, you won't be suprised to know that you have to sign a 24 month contract...

Your choice. If the company you work for can't afford a 64k diginet line, they don't deserve having any kind of internet connection if they won't consider ADSL.

Welcome to the 64k club... :D

We're shopping around. An uncapped, 512k fibre ADSL for R2500 is faster and a wee bit cheaper than our current Diginet cr#p... so soon it'll be bye-bye diginet...
