Telkom to invest R30bn on capex

Interesting

This is merely an observation, but no posts at all for this story? That's interesting.

I believe that this is a good step. It's the right thing to do. We need an upgraded telecoms infrastructure if we ever hope to have ADSL2/2+, effective WiMAX rollout, Triple-Play services, bundled VOIP packages etc.

Improving the infrastructure is the business equivalent of evolution. The only catch is ... it MUST be done in a way that adds benefit to both consumers and the telecoms provider. That means faster line speeds across the board - preferably in line with international standards - cost-based rates for bandwidth - resulting in larger caps at lower prices. This will benefit the consumer. The benefit for the telecoms provider will be massive uptake of the new services and higher revenue streams from a larger client base.

If Telkom truly wants to secure their future revenue, they would do well to stop thinking purely for the shareholders and start catering to the consumers' demands ... no, make that, the consumers' needs. Get this right and competition or no competition, most clients will have no reason to go elsewhere. Oh and truly become Customer-centric through actions and not yet merely well-phrased words. Consumers get tired of empty promises, lies and being treated like uninformed sheep. No amount of goodwill can ever regain lost trust and faith in a company.

LLG, there was a post a few weeks ago about this when it was first announced and the Telkom shareholders soiled themselves because of it.

There was also mention that some of this money would be used to expand their network outside of SA, how much I dunno. Do a quick search and theres a lot of posts about this investment.

from a previous report
Strategically, Telkom’s target for 2010 is to be the information communications technology (ICT) leader in three countries outside SA. Molotsane said the company “has its ears on the ground” and is looking at several opportunities in Africa, including Kenya. Also, Nigeria was not off the screen.

anyone want to wager what portion of this R30bn is spent within the country that actually generated it for them?
I reckon not much and if history is anything to go by it will all go up north while we suck the hind tit as usual.
