Capetonians, expect more power cuts tomorrow

Several towns and suburbs in the Western Cape have been plunged into darkness tonight and are likely to experience power cuts tomorrow morning following a controlled shutdown of the Koeberg nuclear station's unit one.

Fani Zulu, the Eskom spokesperson, says operators took the unit on a controlled shutdown following an electrical fault in the supply to some other parts of the station. Zulu says this resulted in an immediate deficit of 900 megawatts of electricity and subsequent load shedding, which is likely to carry on tomorrow.

"We subsequently had to introduce load shedding for about 300 megawatts or so. We have contained the situation in the Western Cape and I must say the situation is confined to the Western Cape for now," Zulu says. We are introducing load shedding and it will be based on the schedules that we have already published, Zulu added.

Hello Supersunbird. :)

This is more specific to the Western Cape area.

Take into account Unit 2 at Koeberg is completely off-line until about the end of July.
Unit 1 was the Unit that had the broken Rotor which was fixed recently with the new parts from France etc.
Unit 1 has just had a "controlled shut-down" which means that we are back to the same scenario we had at the end of February and beginning of March when Unit 2 when it was still working tripped out because of ash from the recent fires in Cape Town tripping out the line.
Koeberg is producing no power at present, which will leave a short fall of several hundred units which will need to be shed.

If Unit 1 can be restored to normal operations, it still takes about 5 days to get the Unit up to full steam.
The exact amount of days I am not 100% sure of. I am only going on what happened earlier this year.

Well, the thing we get on our TV's is specific to the cape area, they show it nation wide to maybe have us get used to it, I was just wondering why I didn't see anything from 19:30 to 20:30 when watching Commander in Chief.

Its takes 5 days cause they have to synchronise it with the national grid and they have all these stages and tests and verifications to do...

I saw one on SABC2 @ about 19:12
They said power demand is 'under control', it is reducing (orange)
 
5 years living here suffering frequent powercuts - you have no idea how glad I am the I finally bought a generator.

how r u finding the maintenance wrt a generator?
Noisy, fuel, etc?
 
Well this is one bunch who won't be putting any demand on the electricity:

The Western Cape treasury is disputing an amount apparently owed to the city of Cape Town, which by noon on Thursday had cut off the water and electricity supply to the provincial department of local government and housing.

Local government and various others already cut off - for non-payment of their bills. Why does government think they haven't got to pay their bills? But also Waterfront, lots others - anybody seen the full list of shame. As usual anc says its politically motivated (why does everything have to have an agenda with these guys - pay your bills FFS - we're expected to.)

Heard this on the news tonight as well.
I absolutely agree 100% with the power cuts for NON-payers! It's long overdue.

Only thing I am dreading is that it *might* impact on services to rate payers, seeing that it is government / provincial / municipal institutions :eek:

Me thinks Godzilla wants the money to pay the bills that the government should be paying in the first place!? (new soccer stadiums, housing, etc.) So CT citizens are expected to pay their (gubs) bills twice!!
 
And here is the Cape Times "cut" on the non payers in Government with millions in outstanding Bills.

But this thread is actually about Koeberg's Reactor 1 controlled shut-down. :D

Power just went out in Bothasig, Edgemead, Monte Vista Area...
*sigh*

Thing runs like a dream. Small 2 stroke unit so its pretty easy to maintain. A bit noisy (softer than a weed-wacker though). Max rated to 900w but will put out 700 quite happily all day. Thats enough for the tv, sat decoder, laptops, adsl and wireless, plus more of those energy saving bulbs than I'd ever need.

We live in a residential community outside of the city and the neighbours are pretty relaxed. The wind seems to absorb most of the noise anyway and whatever is left is drowned out by the TV :)

Surely these guys would have been prepared for this situation and been able to show the ORANGE scenario immediately?
