MyADSL calls upon all forumites to participate in the ICASA councillor selection procedure.

We can participate in TWO ways:
1) We can send nominations about who we want to be Councillors
2) We can attempt to a get a chosen person or two to sit on a panel. This panel is made up of representatives of the various facets involved in the industries ICASA regulates, and it makes room for a consumer representative. People on the panel speak to parliament/PPCC about who they want on the Council.

There are thus two lists we need to compile:1) a list of about 5 names for councillorship positions; and 2) a list of about 4 names for the Panel positions to represent MyADSL's views to parliament on who should get the councillorship positions.

Please state the names (or MyADSL nicks) of the ppl you wish to nominate, whether they be on the MyADSL forums or not. For example:

1) Councillorship positions: PloempieMoempie; John Telkom-Basher du Toit; etc
2) Panel positions: MouseHunter; James Dean; etc

For more information, please see this post: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost...2&postcount=76 This thread will also be of use to you: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=46784

Please can you take the time to post the names of your preferred candidates for both lists. MyADSL has the opportunity to play an important role here, please do not let this opportunity pass you by.

Q: Do the lists have to be exclusionary to each other? Can one person be on both?

I have just spoken with rpm, and he put forward a strong argument for forumites to nominate people from within MyADSL for Councillorship positions. I have not been so hopeful of this in the past, however rpm and people like DigitalSoldier are correct in stating that we have nothing to lose and everything to gain in submitting names from amongst ourselves. Therefore, please put any of my previous disparaging remarks aside, and go wild. Ultimately we are going to have to shorten the list to whichever people get the most thumbs up from this forum. We have nothing to lose, and it would be a really big step for us as a forum if we were to get one of our own into ICASA.

Why do we have to have 2 seperate lists? Surely the Councillor position would be what we would want most, shouldn't we focus on that one more? And have the parliament panel nominations could be a derivitive.

Also, I think it would be extremlely helpful to have a summary of each likely candidate (like rpm, debbie, dominic/alacos the lawyer dudes, etc) telling people who they are, their qualifications, etc. Only a few people on this forum are completely aware of who these people are exactly, and I admit I'm not one of them.

So I think we need more info for these nominations so ppl can make semi-informed decisions. At least when someone nominates someone else, they could give a bit of background as to why they are, etc.

1) Councillors: dominic, antowan, rpm, TheRodent, Duncan McLeod
2) Panel: MaD, sneeky, tibby.dude, ic, BTTB, Duncan McLeod, JStrike

(Please state a name for CEO should you wish, however, I believe this is solely at the Minister's discretion. Oh, and the charipersonship of ICASA is not up for grabs.)

Debbie I nominate you and rpm, but I cannot be sure of who else.

Prehaps people who would be interested in representing MyADSL should put their names forward.

mooK your points are valid, but I am trying to keep this as simple as possible, though I fear I may have overcomplicated it it's too late now and I think its best to leave this as is. I ask that people who receive a few nominations, or people that wish to put themselves forward for nomination do a little write up on why they should be chosen by forumites. You needn't be embarassed or feel self-conscious about this. This is an important thing we are doing here, and if you think you would be suitable for one of the jobs then please say so. mooK is right (so is kilps) - how are we to know that you are suitable if you don't tell us a little about yourself?

In no particular order:
TheRodent, ic, debbie, tibby.dude, RPM, LoneGunman, Onionpeel

So that others don't feel embarrassed, I'll start this off...

I'd really like to get onto the Panel as a consumer representative. I think I have sufficient knowledge of the telecoms industry and sufficient understanding of (aggregated) consumers' views. I am not shy to speak in public or in intimidating situations so long as I am prepared. I would take this on with the necessary seriousness and passion it deserves. I did my (BA Politics) Honours research report on the telecoms industry in SA. I am currently a politics masters' degree student. I am involved with Antitrust.co.za. I am 24, which could be a disadvantage because people generally don't take me seriously (until I open my mouth, that is :) ).

I think the LoneGunman is still in the US, possibly working for "person". (he missed out on the controversial thread)

Okay, here are my votes, I'm not gonna distinguish between the councillor and panel positions, I think it overcomplicates the vote. I've also added a brief explanation of what I know about them, I'm hoping this will be expanded or even corrected as my knowledge is limited.

rpm: Our leader, founder of MyADSL and a lecturer of Business Information Technology at JHB Uni. Reputation speaks for itself.

debbie: Proactive telecoms activist and masters student in Political Science at Wits.

alacos: American lawyer, famous for defending the Hellkom dude from Telkom. Ardent Telkom adversary. Currently working on a lawsuit related to the missing register of members and telkom share buyback fiasco.

dominic: Another lawyer dude. Don't know much about him other than he's a lawyer, and lawyers are always very nice people. Honest!

I'm sure there are many other people that are qualified for this position on these forums, but these are the only ones whose reputations/positions are currently known to me.

my nomination will be imminent, just need to set up a meeting with my alter-egos to thrash things out. Let you know by Monday

my take is that myadsl should approach this from the perspective of a consumer activist body - as a forum we rely on a blend of different expertise and experience to advance a consumerist agenda with a specific focus on affordability of telecommunications

i see rpm and debbie2 as being two folk with an obvious passion who have consistently translated that passion into constructive activity that has advanced the consumer cause + they both seem fairly happy to have a public profile

what is needed at ICASA is not a particular expertise but rather a particular attitude and a particular energy that can be sustained in the face of constant resistance and institutional politicking

imho (and having met them both :)) rpm and debbie2 have the attitude, the energy and enough knowledge to make a real difference

Thanks dominic. In something related to all this, I am currently drafting the letter to the MoC/DoC/PPCC/political parties/relevent stakeholders. When I have done more work on it I will post it on MyADSL. I am going to need help in editing it and changing it - we have to make a extremely strong argument so that we cannot legitimately be ignored. I'd like input from everyone, but to mention names specifically, for various reasons but mostly their writing/argument skills, dominic, kingmonty, Afrikane, LoneGunman, tibby.dude, mooK, MaD, (the awol) mbs, kaspaas, robmugaap, alacos, and the mods.

I am just wondering - how much do you think having somene from the forum on the inside will give us more info on what is going on? I mean will they have to not say anything unless authorised, although I would think not considering that it is a 'public' organisation ...
