Sometimes I wonder how Apple CEO Steve Jobs can sleep at night. He appears to spend half his waking hours ridiculing Microsoft's admittedly behind-schedule operating system, Windows Vista, for copying Mac OS X features. But this week at Apple's annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), he announced ten new features for Leopard, the next version of OS X, most of which will seem more than vaguely familiar to Windows users. I'm not dim: Microsoft does copy Apple on a fairly regular basis. But seriously, Steve. Apple's just as bad

Wow, what a serious case of sour grapes... It's not possible to steal features from Vista... the "product" is still vapourware, and will remain so till the middle on next year when you'll be paying loads of dosh to rent it from a microsoft server.

Tiger on the other hand, ships now, and Leopard isn't OS XI, its 10.5. Nowhere close to the hype from both Apple and this grumpy old windoze user.:D

If I had a product that was shipping today that did what my competitor has been promising to do for five years, but *MAY* only ship in February... guess what I'd be doing.... I'd be telling people that they don't have to wait... they can buy from me now... *PLUS* its Fall back to school sales time in the US and a crap load more new and returning college students will be walking into class with a macbook and an ipod, instead of a clunky brick of a Dell InspireNOT.:D

If you want useful and insightful appraisal of mac v pc - try anandtech.

So I had to read through that to find out that the feature (singular) that apple might have copied was windows search with spotlight? Spotlight has been out for a generation now and he brings it up now?

Apple isnt just as bad. That article highlighted more windows copying apple than the other way around.

doesnt ms own the majority of apple? sooooo how can apple be stealing from ms, if is merely a part of ms?

*slap*

Gadzooks! That's like saying AMD is merely part of Intel! Or ATI is merely part of Nvidia... *virtual slap flys thru the ethernet* Sober up man.

They gave Apple $150m a few years back in echange for some shares. I don't know if they sold those shares or not, but it hasn't put any urgency into releasing Office or Messenger as a Universal App so I don't think they care too much either way.

This is the best that I could find on M$ 'owning' Apple

This was back in 1997... M$ invested $150,000,000 in non-voting stock to settle a long standing "battle" between the two companies. Basically it was an out of court settlement to settle the whole "MS stole the GUI interface from Apple" issue that went on for years.

With this investment, M$ pretty much admitted it stole the GUI from Apple... they settled so Apple wouldnt take this public (well, any more public than it already was).

As a result of this settlement:

M$ agreed to invest $150,000,000 in non-voting stock (meaning they had no say whatsoever with what went on at Apple)

M$ agreed to continue development of software for the Mac (Office/IE/WMP)

Apple agreed to bundle IE as the default web browser on all its new systems

But that deal is off now... M$ no longer owns these non-voting stocks, and they no longer have to develop software for the Mac... this is most likely why we are seeing iLife/Safari/Final Cut Express/Keynote... Apple is doing all they can to finally dump the ball and chain that is M$

Sounds like Paul Thurrot wants some hits on his site. This reminds me of John C. Dvorak's (dvorak.org/blog) trolling.
I had the same thought. Using the Digg/slashdot effect to bolster ad revenue.

but it hasn't put any urgency into releasing Office or Messenger as a Universal App so I don't think they care too much either way.

And what Adobe Photoshop ... it will be a universal app only in the next release.

The reasons for the delay is well known ... they still use CodeWarrior and not Apple XCode ... switching to a new compiler and build environment is not simple and easy.
