A process is being put into place to unlock network-locked cards already in circulation. This process will commence on the 1st of September and will require the customer who wants his card unlocked to take it to the nearest Vodacare where it will be unlocked for free.

Obviously all new cards or 3G/HSDPA devices will not be network-locked.

Excellent V3G - another coup for you and myadsl forumites - well done on your input into this, I am sure a lot of people will be pleased.....:D

Obviously all the cards already in the channel will probably be locked still, only the new batches will come unlocked.

But you can just take them in from next month to be unlocked. The unlocking software and instructions are going out to the Vodacare shops so we need to give them some time to get ready.

Hear Hear .... that certainly is a smart move for Vodacom and it's refreshing to know that the community's voice is getting heard. V3G .. Well done on this.

Any news on the unrestricted APN and non-working [email protected] address?

Cheers

abuse is working again.

unrestricted nearly there. Make sure you provision so long. I've asked for the auto-provisioning to be pulled. Way to dangerous to allow anyone to provision themselves on this apn. Will be done via 155 in the future. But I'll post more detail in the relevant thread.

This is awesome news! I only recently discovered my paid for in cash Huawei data card was network locked and thought I'd very neatly painted myself into corner. I'll probably be sticking to Vodacom for my data needs as I'm convinced there coverage is the best (not to mention HSDPA/3G speeds) but it will be nice to have a backup option available to me when the Vodacom network is down.

1600 base stations and counting...:)

Have been travelling recently and was completely amazed at the places where you get 3G coverage, it really has expanded nicely especially in the rural areas. And if we could get all the bits of copper into the ground required, it would be even better....

 thanks v3g for driving this, and to Vodacom|Vodafone for seeing the darkness at the end of the tunnel & doing a 180 :).

Thanks V3G ... and the darknwess at the end of the tunnel might just be becuse Eskom switch the lights off to save power in WC... (grin)

Brilliant move Vodacom! :D

[Vodacom] You're losing the Telkom touch thankfully!

@V3G: Thanks for making this happen!

I hope this counts for all devices sold by Vodacom and not just cards. I don't want to buy a modem and find out it's locked and can't be unlocked.

no mobile device is allowed to be network locked any more

This I believe is an ICASA ruling. All networks have to comply.
