Bad telecoms service? Tell the world

Hi folks

I think it may be a good idea for MyADSL to carry some of the costs and then divide our spot into small slots (like small blocks) which users can then buy and publish a message or whatever else they want. Whatever empty space is left can be used as a communal space for MyADSL and its members.

Your thoughts on this will be great.

Regards,

RPM

I could support a sum of money from MyADSL's kitty for such a project.
However as always, we must of course make sure this is all legit.

R50K divided up between several businesses and organisations isn't much.
I think a 2 pager in The Sunday Times would also pass on the message to hundreds of thousands of people.

Good idea. Just a bit expensive.
Perhaps the Newspaper would care to offer a discount as their own contribution?

Hi BTTB

I think the safest route (considering what happened the previous time) is that MyADSL purchases a certain slice of the page, and then our members can contribute to our slice – giving them some message space on our slice – making it more affordable for MyADSL.

I will find out what the legalities are regarding such an ad so long…

Regards,

RPM

Sort of like the "million dollar homepage" did? Where you could buy a pixel for a dollar?
Sounds like not such a bad idea - depending on the size/cost of the blocks.. :)

EDIT: how about something like this: A large MyAdsl logo with some info about the site, and underneath a list of forumites who contributed to the ad:
like this:

======================================
MyAdsl.co.za Logo
<message> (come here to rant about Telkom) :D
======================================
Contributors: xxx, yyy, zzz etc...
======================================

Just my idea... :o

Good idea!

We can decide on the details when we have more clarity as to what their plans are with the page.

I'm quite concerned about the following:

1) The Mail & Guardian, while a highly respectable publications, isn't exactly widely read. This needs to get into The Argus, Sowetan, Daily News, etc.

2) They haven't confirmed pricing yet. What exactly does that entail? Surely you just phone up the paper and say "How much does a double-page spread cost? If they haven't yet confirmed pricing for a campaign they are asking for donations for, something smells a little off. Surely it should have been the first thing they did?

Nevertheless, I will probably contribute. I just think it's slightly missing the mark from the get-go.

I agree about the publications they need to target. If it's a choice between Sunday Times and the Mail & Guardian, I'd say go Sunday Times. Most people who read the Mail & Guardian are probably already well aware of the problem. We need to target Joe Soap, the average South African. If there was enough money, I'd say go regional, as DVDA pointed out. The Star, Daily Dispatch, Argus, etc.

From the looks of it the campaign is like the infamous firefox one - it's going to be a text montage (a picture is created out of text) so I dont think using graphics or a particular layout is going to be an option.

Hi everyone

Do you think we're aiming too low with R50k?

Code:
R16 900.00 / R50 000.00 (33.8%)

It looks like we've got to 1/3 of our target in one day!

Sunday Times: Full page B/W advert costs in the region of R200k.
The Mail&Guardian: Full page B/W advert costs around R40-50k.

I like the M&G because it is a really credible outlet for this type of "protest literature", and because it has a reputation to keep, they'd certainly run the ad.

Then again, the Sunday Times is first prize, but it costs a bomb.

On the idea of MyADSL sectioning off some space for their members, I think it's important that whatever we do has a consistent look, like we're all standing together on this issue.

Of course, perhaps a clever design could achieve this while still having a section for MyADSL members.

Your thoughts?

Richard

I say aim high. The Sunday Times. :)

WRT a MyADSL block - I dont see why you couldn't put a text montage within a text montage.

This is all fine and well for internet users but there are plenty people out there who are ignorant of action campaigns like this one.

I therefore challenge all MyAdsl members to go out there from today until sunday and spread the word. Collect as many pledges from friends and family as you can get and then on monday you pledge what you have managed to get. Maybe MyAdsl can put together some kind of form that can be downloaded and printed with space for the info as required by the website.

Just an idea.

Is it really a good idea to buy a separate space for MYADSL members?
We should all just stand together and let the tectonic ppl get on with it, since we're fighting for the same thing.

Y dont we jst collect all the money from forum members and donate it to them with the name of MYADSL..
That should give us more than enough recognition. I mean if we donate
R10000 - R15000 as a group it would be gr8.
Otherwise everysingle consumer activist group will want a space on the advert and things will go terribly wrong..

Just my thoughts :D

Donations will initially be rapid, but are likely to slow down after a short while. Also note that the first few donations are high amounts while most of the later pledges are in the R200 range.

Pity we can't do this throughout each month, like Wikipedia donations. I could deal with giving up R200 a month.

Well i'm in. I would very much like to see it in the Sunday Times. Hopefully enough of us will support! We only need 1000 people to donate R200 each. That's not a lot to ask!!!!

Lets GO FOR IT
